This Language Arts class will cover a broad range of material in literature, grammar, and writing. Language Arts topics covered in this course include: analyzing literature, exploring setting and context, learning about authors, and using proper punctuation and citations. Students will write, work through edits, and revise fictional narratives, persuasive essays, and explanatory essays. Many of the literature selections center on the theme of travel and adventure. The class time will be devoted to discussing and responding to the literature selection and writing, grammar, and spelling. An assignment sheet will be posted each week with grammar work, a spelling list, reading assignment, and writing instructions in preparation for a weekly at-home writing assignment. Between classes, students will be expected to complete literature readings and writing and work through brief assigned grammar selections. If a student needs help, I will be available to meet individually for a 20 minute optional private tutoring session each week. This tutoring time is not mandatory; it is available if students or parents have questions or want to go over writing. I will also be available throughout the week via email or text to give feedback or answer questions on their independent work. Literature covered on this schedule: Weeks 1,2,3- Swiss Family Robinson Weeks 4,5,6- Around the World in 80 Days Weeks 7,8- The Old Man and the Sea
