Students will learn be engrossing themselves in the Hunger Games and other STUDENT SELECTED texts for the Fall semester! We will discuss the major tenants of literacy during class, while emphasizing reading enjoyment! Books should be read for pleasure and Hunger Games is one of those books which captures the hearts of young readers and makes them want more! The more you read, the more you know. Our first text, The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, is a personal favorite of mine. The story...
Students will learn and practice essential literacy skills by reading the Hunger Games and other student selected texts over a semester.
I am an excellent teacher for this class for two reasons. First, I have the pedagogical skills required to design and teach a highly engaging class in the area of literacy. I have taught for 9 years and I am an MAT student at the Johns Hopkins School of Education. I have taken many classes on reading during my time at Hopkins. I am knowledgable and passionate about the strategies needed to improve student's reading abilities. Second, I LOVE dystopian fiction. I believe that choosing texts students will enjoy is the best way to foster a love of reading in students and students WILL LOVE THIS BOOK!
There will be regular homework to prepare for the next class. Students can expect to read 30-50 pages between class sessions. However, the exact chapters will not be predetermined as student participation and teacher readings will guide what happens each night after class. In addition, students will sometimes have pre-work to prepare them for the upcoming class session!
The Hunger Games: $8.79 Students will also need to purchase texts after they make their selections in class. In addition, students will need post-its, preferred writing utensil (computer or pencil and a notebook!
Students will receive a letter grade (if requested) and will receive written comments/feedback through out the coursework!
2 hours 15 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
The Hunger Game includes mature themes. I have read this text with Middle School students in the past and have always found it to be age-appropriate. However, please feel free to reach out with any questions!
