Course Description: **Must have completed the Part 1 course to take this class.** This rigorous semester-long Language Arts Independent course does not have any live meetings and is a continuation to the Part 1 course. This course is aligned to national standards. We will focus on the areas of reading literature, reading informational, writing, speaking and listening, and language. During this course, students will work on the standards that focus around citing text evidence, theme, summarizing, plot, character change, point of view, figurative language, argument writing, collaboration and discussion, and academic vocabulary. National Standards: -RL.5.1, RL.6.1, RL.7.1, RL.8.1, RL.9.1 - Citing Text Evidence Literature -RL.5.2, RL.6.1, RL.7.2, RL.8.2, RL,9.1 - Theme -RL.5.2, RL.6.2, RL.7.2, RL.8.2, RL.9.2 - Summarizing -RL.5.3, RL.6.3, RL.7.3, RL.8.3, RL.9.3 - Plot -RL.5.3, RL.6.3, RL.7.3, RL.8.3, RL.9.3 - Character Change -Rl.5.4, RL.6.4, RL.7.4, RL.8.4, RL.9.4 - Figurative Language -RL.5.6, RL.6.6, RL.7.6, RL.8.6, RL.9.6 - Point of View -RI.5.1, RI.6.1, RI.7.1, RI.8.1, RI.9.1 - Citing Text Evidence -RI.5.2, RI.6.2, RI.7.2, RI.8.2, RI.9.2 - Summarizing -W.5.1, W.6.1, W.7.1, W.8.1, W.9.1 - Argument Writing -SL.5.1, SL.6.1, SL.7.1, SL.8.1, SL.9.1 - Collaboration and Discussion -L.5.6, L.6.6, L.7.6, L.8.6, L.9.6 - Academic Vocabulary Course Format: At the beginning of the week, a “List of Learning” Google Doc will be posted on the Outschool classroom page. Each “List of Learning” will have steps students need to complete for the week. These steps will include a lesson video to watch when a new standard is being introduced, reading assignments, discussion questions to respond to and give feedback to other classmates, assessments to complete, writing assignments, and possible other assignments or extension opportunities. Any work that will be turned in for grades/scores, will be in the form of a Google Doc. Students will need to share the document with the teacher and other students will not have access to the document. A Google Spreadsheet will be shared with each student in order to track progress when an assignment is graded/scored. It is encouraged to have the readings and assignments done by each due date so students can participate in discussions together. To give each student a more meaningful learning experience, all students need to participate in the discussion questions by responding to the questions and giving feedback to other students. The teacher will be available throughout the week via Outschool to answer any questions and give feedback. Parental Guidance
We will be reading the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. I wanted you to be aware of possible sensitive topics that this novel addresses. Due to the historical context of this novel (set in the South in the early 1930's), there are racial topics addressed that depict the attitude of the time period. The theme for this unit is Decisions That Matter. Literary skills will include point of view, character motivation, figurative language, and theme.
