Class Experience

This Language Arts class will cover a broad range of material in literature, grammar, and writing. Enroll in consecutive sections for broader coverage of grammar and writing.

Language Arts topics covered in this course include: persuasive writing supported by logical reasoning and refuting counterarguments, writing historical narratives, deciphering Greek and Latin prefixes and suffixes, comparison of writing styles, writing poetry, age-appropriate grammatical conventions, and editing. Many of the literature selections emphasize a journey in pursuit of good.

The class time will be devoted to discussing and responding to the literature selection, writing presentation and sharing, grammar, and root word discussion. An assignment sheet will be posted each week with grammar work, word root list, reading assignment, and writing instructions in preparation for a weekly at-home writing assignment. Between classes, students will be expected to complete literature readings and writing and work through brief assigned grammar selections.

Office Hours: Rather than schedule one block for office hours, I will be available to meet individually for an optional 20 minute private tutoring session each week, used to answer student/parent questions and review writing. This tutoring block is optional and available each week by request. I will also be available throughout the week via email or text to give feedback or answer questions on their independent work.

Literature covered on this schedule:
Weeks 1,2,3- A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Weeks 4,5,6- The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Weeks 7,8- King Arthur: Tales from the Round Table (Andrew Lang or whatever version you have)

LEARNER TIME
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Jennifer enjoys sharing her passion for writing, literature, and the creative arts with students of all ages. As a magazine and commercial writer for national and international corporations and publications, she has relished the great privilege of a career spent stringing words together.

Her background as an elementary school teacher and near decade of homeschooling a brood of four rowdy loves has revealed both the joy and struggle of teaching. She embraces a philosophy of literature based learning with heavy doses of nature thrown in for good measure, aspiring to but always falling quite short of the admirable principles of her mentor, Charlotte Mason.

In her free time, usually eeked out in the wee hours of the night when she should be sleeping, she enjoys devouring library books before her toddler wracks up fines by putting pen and marker to their tempting canvas of pages. She would love to count your children among those she is honored to teach.
