This course (Part one of four 9-week sections) will target students’ growth in the areas of writing, reading, comprehension, oration, discussion, and reflection. The class will be organized and taught in a way to support the integration of reading strategies as well as the expansion of vocabulary and critical thinking skills. By using fiction and non-fiction texts, students will be able to practice reading strategies and comprehension skills. Writing will be structured around mastering the...
Homework will entail vocabulary memorization, grammar practice, and out-of-class reading. Each week, homework should take around one hour to an hour and a half.
Novel: Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy by Gary D. Schmidt (Note: a free, online version of this book is available on openlibrary.org.) ruled notebook paper, pens and pencils, index cards.
Learner progress will be based on both formative and summative assessments. The instructor will provide both written and verbal feedback, as well as a letter grade at the end of the course.
2 hours 45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
