What's included
4 live meetings
3 hrs 20 mins in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. Homework assignments are provided following each class. Students may begin homework in class as time allows. The purpose of homework is to give students an opportunity to apply the skills targeted in each class. Typically, assignments will require up to 30 minutes to complete. Homework products will include some format options, but will always include narrative work. Some alternatives to narrative assignments could include artwork and data manipulation or display.Assessment
The teacher will provide a written response to each student product. This response will highlight strengths of student work and suggestions for improvements. My guidance philosophy is that all human work has strengths. It is important to celebrate these strengths as part of learning. At the same time, we all have opportunities to improve. A teacher's role is to help students recognize both, helping them grow toward becoming independent learners.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
This class offers an opportunity to review and apply skills which students have learned in various classes from this series " Middle School Geography of the World." Weekly sessions will briefly review the major approach to each skill, then provide context activities where students can actually apply these skills. The class structure will include a brief teacher presentation plus activities that students will complete together and independently in class. Homework assignments offer additional skill practice for a wider and deeper cumulative experience. The teacher will review all work that is completed and provide written comments to each student. Week 1: Mapping Skills, Latitude and Longitude, Interpreting Data Maps Week 2: Evaluating and interpreting world Standard of Living data Week 3: Sourcing - Evaluating sources for credibility and for choosing strong evidence Week 4: Writing to prove a point, using evidence from a variety of source types (primary and secondary sources, timelines, maps, images, diaries, text entries, etc.) in a structured format. Students who have taken classes in this series may enroll in this class. Students who are fairly confident they understand the skills listed for each week may also enroll. This class is not designed to teach these skills to novice students who have not worked with them in the past.

Parental Guidance
Homework assignments are provided and are strongly encouraged. For source material, students may access information from one or more of the following sites. These sites provide useful research resources and give our students an opportunity to practice skills, gather research information and extend their learning. For on-line best practice, students should use the link to a resource that is provided in our classroom. No membership or sign up is required to access the links for homework. Best practice also recommends responsible adults monitor student on-line activity.
Supply List
Student homework assignments are presented with tech options: low tech vs. higher. Students can use a variety of applications as they choose, as long as the product can be shared in Outschool. For example: Word, Google Docs, Paper/Pencil (take a photo and upload). Nearpod may be accessed but students are not required to create an account or provide their full name.

Certified as a Social Studies Teacher in my state, I have taught Social Studies (including World Geography) for over 18 years, primarily at the Middle School level. My classes have had lots of fun and engagement with World Geography, delving into the wonders of 'oh so slightly' familiar cultures, as well as cultures that are dramatically different from the West. Students sparkle when engaging in special projects, conversations, Kahoot Challenges, interactive games and other teaching practices designed to help our students enjoy becoming a master of their own learning. Master's Degree (Public Policy), Bachelor's Degree (History), Teaching Certificate (State of Maryland) : Social Studies, History, Middle School Language Arts, 30 credits beyond Master's Degree. I am grateful to all my students, both in traditional classrooms and on line, for all that they teach me every day.
