US Grade 5 - 8
In this one-time class, students will learn how to annotate a given text for literary elements and then write an analytical paragraph, also known as a short-answer response (SAR). This type of writing is a skill students need not only in middle-school, but also in high-school. By using teacher modeling, I will show students how to write the universal SAR paragraph, including assertion, commentary, embedded text evidence, and conclusion. We will begin class by reading and annotating a short story. I will then present a writing prompt and help students plan, draft, revise, and edit the perfect analytical paragraph. Students are invited to submit their final paragraph for my feedback. This class is highly interactive and hands-on as students will be asked to offer their ideas and help in writing the paragraph.
Learning Goals
By the end of this class, students will be able to write an analytical paragraph, including assertion, commentary, embedded text evidence, and conclusion.
