Description
Class Experience
This six week class is ideal for 7th and 8th grade students who are home schooling but all learners who would benefit from this class and the story are certainly welcome to attend. Throughout this course we will be reading multiple chapters from the book Holes by Louis Sachar every week. The story focuses on Stanley Yelnats, a middle school boy who is convicted of larceny and sentenced to an eighteen month stay at Camp Green Lake instead of going to a juvenile jail. A packet will be sent via...
It is my hope that students will walk away from this course with more confidence in themselves as readers, increased awareness of the world around them, and deeper knowledge of the themes this book represents. I would very much like this classroom experience to be a positive one for all learners who enroll.
I have 5 + years teaching experience. I have a lifelong membership with the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. At the associate’s level at Southern Maine Community College, I studied Criminal Justice and Psychology, this included learning to professionally diagnose a patient with a mental disorder. I have a bachelor's degree in Educational Studies from Grand Canyon University, and a masters degree in history also from Grand Canyon University. I also have more than 20 credits in English.
Homework will be assigned each week. Learners will be assigned to either read specific sections of the book before class or watch videos on YouTube relevant to the topics in the book.
I will create a packet with sections to be completed each week. Please have a copy of your packet available digitally or in print. Alternatively you can bring a paper and pencil to class. You will need access to YouTube which is free for any videos assigned for homework. At the end of this class you will need a Disney Plus subscription to watch the film version of Holes.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
- YouTube.com
- Disney Plus
I do not usually assign grades. If grades are needed to satisfy home schooling requirements please contact me before class and I will arrange grading for your learner.
4 hours per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Holes is considered a literary classic. It is included in the common core and it has a film adaptation which is available for streaming on Disney Plus. While this book is used by teachers in elementary and middle schools across America it does explore mature and controversial issues which still exist in the American juvenile and adult criminal justice systems. Some of these issues include juvenile delinquency, racism, corruption of police and correctional officers, and wrongful incarceration. Any videos I assign to watch for homework will explore the controversial issues mentioned above and might contain offensive language. If you are uncomfortable with your child learning about this book and these topics this might not be the right class for them. If you are comfortable with them learning about this book and these topics, then I am more than willing to teach them. In my opinion while these issues are mature, they are important to discuss because they do still exist in the modern day. It is my hope that by learning about these issues we can prevent them from occurring in the future. I am a firm believer in the old saying that knowledge is power.
We will be reading the book Holes by Louis Sachar. Please bring a copy of the book with you to class. You will also need access to YouTube and Disney Plus.
