Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
In this multi day class we will cover space science topics through the use of slide show presentations, hands on demonstrations and projects for students to participate, activities such as Kahoot and Blooket will also be utilized. Students will keep weekly notes in a journal along with interactive activities and write-ups. Each class will end with students sharing what they learned during our time together. This class will meet twice a week for 45 minutes for 4 weeks and cover the following topics:

Week 1- Class introductions- Students will participate in a get to know you activity where they will get to know the teacher and other students. We will review the ideas that students understand about the different objects in our galaxy. We will begin discussing what objects make up our galaxy. We will begin our discussion of the Big Bang.

Week 2- How did the galaxy start? Through a slide show the teacher will explain the Big Bang Theory. The theory will be explained through a discussion of expansion ideas. We will discuss how the universe is theorized to be expanding and how objects in the universe are believed to have been created. We will discuss the first known gases to develop and how they are found throughout the universe. Along with the idea of Cosmic Background Radiation. Draw an Infographic explaining how the Universe is expanding.

Week 3- What is Gravity? Through hands on activities/demonstrations students will look at what gravity is and how it affects things in the Universe. We will also look at the roll of air resistance.

Week 4- How does gravity affect the tides on earth? In this class we will look at different ways the moon's gravity and rotation develop our tides. We will also look at the different types of tides.

Week 5- Will a star ever die? Using an infographic of a stars life cycle students will create a notice and wonder chart. Through a slide show/photographs students will be shown the different phases a star goes through. We will use photos/slides to match the different phases.

Week 6 -Students will use the information from week 5 to create a comic strip describing the life cycle. This will be done using slideshow, word processing or paper. Students will then share their writing with the class.
.
Week 7- What is a galaxy? We will use slideshow presentation to look at the different known galaxy types with an emphasis on our own Milky Way.

Week 8- Students will take time at the beginning of class to share the most interesting topic we discussed over the eight weeks and what they learned. The last 15 minutes of this class we will be playing Blooket to see what the students have learned over the previous
4 weeks.

Learning Goals

Students will come out of this class with an understanding of how scientists believe the universe was created. The class will be taught using scientific evidence that the universe is expanding.
