This course is designed for small communities of learners and is a hybrid of individualized tutoring and traditional instruction covering middle school science content. Each section has no more than six learners which provide a foundation for strong relationships, social-emotional learning, and truly individualized instruction during this critical developmental period. Students will understand the chemistry of seawater. Students will understand the importance of the ocean. Students will be able to explain and identify the ocean zones. Students will be able to explain and identify types of waves. Students will be able to explain the importance of currents for climate regulation. Students will identify geological features in the ocean. Students will be able to explain common forms of ocean pollution and the hazards they present.
I have been teaching science for two years and have over ten years of experience in informal science education work at children's museums, science centers, planetariums, and natural history museums. I have completed three college courses on science education as well as college-level courses on conservation education. I have worked at and led educational workshops on ocean conservation focusing on microplastics and oil spills. I am a Project! Wild Aquatic certified educator.
Students will be provided digital materials (complete with additional videos and books to consult if needed) for two self-led learning days each week. These are organized by subjects into packets which should take an hour or less.

We will use daily quiz games to monitor concept comprehension. Learners will receive brief progress reports each week. Additionally, projects will be used to informally assess student comprehension and mastery.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
We will be discussing natural disasters including references to real natural disasters and ocean pollution. Discussions will be age-appropriate and include no visual images or descriptions of injuries. However, due to the topic nature death or injuries may be implied or mentioned by student questions or responses. Additionally, injuries to animals will be discussed in the context of ocean pollution. We will be using Nearpod. This online platform requires students to click a link in chat and enter a username in order to view materials and complete interactive activities. Students are encouraged to use first initials or names only. Please remind your student not to use their full name online for safety reasons.
Sources will include articles from National Geographic, BBC, Scientific Journals, and Encyclopedias adapted to grade-level. We will also be using some resources adapted from Open Educational Resources "Middle School Earth Science Textbooks including Thunderbolt Kids Fifth and Sixth Grade, "Introduction to Earth Science", NOAA Ocean Explorers Curriculum, CK12.org, and Stanford Edu's "Learning through Application" textbook. All of which are distributed under a Creative-Commons Attribution License which allows for commercial use.
