Middle School Earth Science-1 (Summer Intensive Session)
Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Follows Teacher-Created Curriculum
OF NOTE: Students who have already taken Earth Science Semester 1 will be repeating that information. Want to stop the 'summer slide'? Looking forward to a summer of experiments? Then this Earth Science Summer Session is for you! Studying the Earth, the rocks, the weather, it's oceans and stars....this is Earth Science! In this intensive summer session, students will meet twice a week and will also be expected to complete homework at home. This class will focus on five aspects of Earth...
14 lessons//7 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1MineralsBeginning with minerals, students will learn their properties, how they are formed, and use a simple equation to determine the density of mineral. -Homework for this class includes an evaporation lab at homeLesson 2Rocks and Rock CycleWe will classify the three types of rocks and learn their properties along with viewing examples of each. Students will also be introduced to the rock cycle. -Homework this class includes an at-home rock scavenger hunt.Week 2Lesson 3Plate TectonicsStudents will journey through each layer of the Earth and learn the difference between convection and conduction. Seafloor spreading and continental drift will be modeled. -Homework this week includes modeling convection currents at home.Lesson 4EarthquakesStudents will learn about the different kinds of fault lines as well as the different patterns of seismic waves. We will use common household objects to demonstrate this during class. -Homework this class includes an at-home experiment with Jell-O to see seismic waves.Week 3Lesson 5VolcanoesUtilizing previously learned information about plate tectonics and seafloor spreading, students will spend this class period learning about types of volcanoes. -Homework will include a mapping worksheet of world volcanoesLesson 6Erosion, Deposition, and WaterStudents will learn about erosion, deposition, and how water changes the surface of the Earth. Students will use sugar cubes to simulate groundwater erosion and cave formation during class. -Homework will include an at-home experiment to simulate how glaciers change the land.Week 4Lesson 7GlaciersStudents will learn how glaciers change the landscape and how waves in the oceans are formed. -Homework this class includes an at-home experiment on how moving air affects sediment.Lesson 8Energy ResourcesThis class period is all about different forms of energy resources, fossil fuels, solar, hydroelectric, wind, nuclear, and geothermal. -Homework will be building a solar cooker at home!Week 5Lesson 9All About OceansHere, students discover characteristics of waves, how tides work, and ocean currents. -Homework includes an at-home density experiment.Lesson 10Earth's AtmosphereStudents will learn about the composition of Earth's atmosphere and utilize our math skills to determine density. -Homework will include a review worksheet.Week 6Lesson 11World ClimatesWhat causes the weather to be different around the world? Students will utilize latitude and longitude to explain climate around the world. -Homework this class includes a latitude/longitude scavenger hunt worksheetLesson 12Earth and SpaceAxis and seasons, gravity and motion, all affect our planet. Students will utilize a stack of pennies and a ruler to demonstrate the law of inertia. -Homework includes an inference worksheetWeek 7Lesson 13Solar SystemComets, meteors, and stars. Besides planets, what else lies in our solar system? This class period we look to the stars to see what is outside of our planet. -Homework includes a drawing and a report on a star constellation of the student's choiceLesson 14Semester Review GameUsing games and class discussion, students will review the last 7 weeks of class. Teacher feedback is sent to parents at the conclusion of the class.
- Students will take the summer to explore through lecture, experiments, demonstrations, homework, and discussion the five fields of Earth Science....astronomy, geology, environmental science, meteorology, and oceanography.
I was a middle school science teacher for 10 years. I have also homeschooled my daughter for 10 years. As a public school teacher, I taught Earth Science, Chemistry, Physical Science, Zoology, Biology, and more to hundreds of students. Science is a passion of mine and I find performing experiments both fascinating and illuminating when learning new scientific facts! In this class, students will have ample opportunity to perform their own experiments to reiterate the information they learn in class. I have my Bachelor's degree in Biology/Pre-Med and a Master's in Healthcare Administration.

Homework
Frequency: 7 or more throughout the classFeedback: includedDetails: Homework is assigned at the end of each class. Homework will be posted in the classroom. Please allow 1-2 hours for homework each week. Work is always optional and not required.Assessment
Frequency: includedDetails: A letter grade will be given for each homework assignment. The parent will receive a teacher feedback report on the student's progress at the end of the course.Letter Grade
Frequency: includedDetails: A letter grade will be given for each homework assignment turned in. Grades and homework are not mandatory but will be given upon request or when work is turned in. A semester grade can be requested by parent/guardian.
Activities are not mandatory and can be adapted to fit the needs of each individual learner. Notes and homework can be digitally manipulated if student prefers, graded or not, no reading out loud in class.
-Index cards -Scissors -Markers -Ruler -Jello -Sugar cubes -Sand -Bar of soap (any brand or kind) -Eggs -Salt -Plastic straws -Newspaper -Yard stick
All experiments utilize household materials. Some experiments may be messy. Please read homework beforehand to determine if experiments need to be performed outside to save the house from a mess :-) Scissors may also be used in some experiments. Your child must be mature enough in your estimation to handle them.
