US Grade 5 - 8
Learners will write a new creative writing piece in each class during this short course for middle-school ages. Whether it is after school, supplementing homeschool, or the learner's choice to come, it is for sure that each class will have a new and exciting creative writing challenge that is open enough for writers to enjoy a plethora of creative freedom. Learners and the teacher will discuss the format and theme of the day, as well as review story elements like plot, characters, setting, conflict, and resolution to begin the class. Learners are encouraged to participate in a short brainstorming session, then enjoy independent writing time. Everyone may share (optional) their piece at the end of class time. In addition, learners will follow a sandwich format to give constructive criticism to their peers following a three-step process: what was done well, what might be improved on, and a favorite part. In this way, learners will experience and practice giving and receiving critique on their writing work. The goal is to write a new piece following an interesting new style, prompt, or format by the end of class. Class schedule (time management will be key) 5 mins: Greeting and sharing any homework writing 10 mins: Get theme and plan/brainstorm 25 mins: Writing 15 mins: Sharing and giving/getting feedback Upcoming themes for each week: Oct 9: Musing From a Picture Oct 16: Three elements Oct 23: Roll the Story Dice or Spin the Story Wheel Oct 30: Flipped Fairy Tale The themes will repeat after 4 weeks. **Further experience notes: During my 20+ years working in Education, I have worked with all age groups. I really do not favor one group over the other as they are each special in their own way. However, I have always found it easy to build rapport and sound relationships with teens. While in Ecuador, I built an English Language Academy and often taught teen and adult classes due to the level of English required. These classes fulfilled me so much because of the conversations, relationships, and learning experiences the student brought to me! Additionally, I have worked in afterschool and summer programs where I gravitated toward the older groups of teens. I have completed many 1 on 1 tutoring with teens to help with studying and test preparation.
