In this class, students will dive deeply into creative writing five times a week for two weeks. They will learn about the writing process, characters, setting, plot, dialogue and more. Each class begins with a lesson and then students are given up to twenty minutes to write. Students will complete one story of 500 to 1,500 words in the class. Week 1Lesson 1The Writing ProcessIn this class, students will introduce themselves and review the writing process and elements of a story.Lesson 2Plot StructureIn this class, students will dissect a story and then plan out the structural elements of their own story.Lesson 3Setting: Simile and MetaphorIn this class, students will recognize similes and metaphor in a story and then apply simile and metaphor to their own stories.Lesson 4Character: MotivationIn this class, students will learn about what the character wants, what the character needs and how the character grows.Lesson 5DialogueIn this class, students will learn how to write dialogue and how and when to use dialogue in a story.Week 2Lesson 6Points of ViewIn this class, students will learn about the various points of view and how and when to use them in a story.Lesson 7Word ChoiceIn this class, students will look at their stories using the CUPS (Capitalization, Usage, Punctuation and Spelling Method) focusing on Usage (word choice)Lesson 8Critique GroupsIn this class, students will share writing with their classmates and receive feedback. Students are not required to share, but are encouraged to.Lesson 9RevisionsIn this class, students will revise their piece using the feedback provided by the other students and the teacher.Lesson 10SubmissionsIn this class, students will learn about the submission process authors go through for contests and publication and format their piece.
- Students will be able to explain each step of the writing process - a process which is used in all types of writing.
- Students will be able to comprehend stories more fully upon grasping the meaning of each story elements.
- Students will be able to apply description elements such as metaphor and similar to writing in order to engage readers.
- Students will increase vocabulary by reviewing word choice and applying them to their creative writing.
- Students will be able to use and understand points of view and how they are used and apply it to writing and reading skills.
