Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
The study of chemistry and the atomic world is in many ways the foundation to understanding modern science. This course will cover atoms, molecules, and chemical bonds and will extend through the periodic table and the characteristics of metals and nonmetals. This content provides the setting for learning about chemical and physical changes, as well as chemical reactions and equations. Solution chemistry allows students to gain experience in practical chemistry and offers interesting reactions for students to observe. Students will investigate the way substances react and how energy is important in the dynamics of matter and its states. Along the way, they will be exposed to the scientific method, scientific measurement techniques using the metric system, and inquiry-based science. The live classes will include interesting demonstrations.

PLEASE NOTE: Students are expected to be onscreen during during any class discussions or questions

Supply List
Students will need a notebook for assignments, observations, and experimental results. Occasionally students will need certain easily-obtainable materials from stores. For full participation, there are also a few materials that need to be purchased separately: a balance, a couple of 100/50 ml graduated cylinders, a few plastic pipets, pH paper, and a small alcohol thermometer. To complete assignments, students will also need to purchase a printable Middle School Chemistry workbook packet at https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Middle-School-Chemistry-Packet-5894702

Teacher expertise and credentials
Doctoral Degree in Science from Rutgers University
I have a PhD in Microbiology but soon thereafter became certified to teach because I wanted to be with kids. I have many years experience teaching middle school science including having taught 8th grade chemistry for several years. Even in an online setting, I make my classes as hands-on, interesting, fun, and rigorous as possible.
