US Grade 5 - 8
In this ongoing course, students will meet fellow book lovers and explore many types of reading materials. Each week, there will be a featured reading to discuss. We will be covering fiction and non-fiction. Most classes we will read a short story, article, or poem together in class. If a particular book interests students, we will continue to read it in class. We will summarize what has already been read for new students just joining. Reading outside of the classroom is not required because we do all reading in class together. We will explore many genres together to ensure a wide variety of reading materials. Some examples of genres included are mystery, adventure, comedy, and occasionally a graphic novel or comic. In each class we will do a brief ice breaker to help students feel comfortable participating in class. However, participation is recommended, not required. Listening to the reading and activities works too. After our ice breaker, we will explore some pre-reading techniques to aide in comprehension. Then we will take turns reading aloud. Once the reading has concluded, we will answer some post reading questions and participate in a book discussion. Finally, we will play a game, watch a short video clip, or complete an activity based on the reading. Since I was a young child, I have loved to read many different types of books. I found that I could go on an adventure while in the comfort of my own home, just by opening a good book. This is what I would like to share with my students. My goal is to find books that your children will not be able to put down. We will learn many reading techniques in this class to increase fluency and comprehension. I also hope to help students improve their reading comprehension by incorporating fun activities and games into each class. In my experience as a teacher, students learn more when they can apply the new information while having fun at the same time. *Current Schedule* July 14- 20th: Summer Camp themed stories, all reading will be done in class July 21-27th: Bring an excerpt from your favorite summer reading July 28- August 3: Poems about going back to school after summer August 4-10: Fairy Tale character discussion *Past Classes* Week of October 10-16: Poems from "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein. While I mostly focus on reading and writing skills, I also offer classes involving animals, Disney movies, dress up, and much more.
I believe that children retain most information if they can connect to the material they are learning about. I strive to create a upbeat, fun classroom where all students feel excepted and free to express themselves. Learning can be fun when taught in creative and exciting ways. All of my offered classes are designed to keep your learners engaged with activities. Learners also participate in discussions and gain instruction in a positive learning environment.
