Beginner Level
Graphs, variables, calculations - oh my! If your learner is going back to school or needs a solid refresh on science fundamentals, then this class is for them!! We go through the building foundations for ALL courses! Not only are these skills good to have, but they apply to chemistry, physics, biology...any branch of science you can think of! Your learner will connect with their own interests to complete all different types of activities and work through the 5 week course. Use their favorite foods to talk about the scientific method? Check! Minecraft inspired graphing? Check! By the end of this course, your student will be an expert at fundamental science skills that they will carry into various science topics! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out! (:
Learning Goals
Students will understand how scientists collect data and make observations.
Students will create bar and line graphs using data.
Syllabus
Standards
Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)5 Lessons
over 5 WeeksLesson 1:
Scientific Method & Qualitative/Quantitative Data
This lesson introduces the steps to the scientific method and talks about why it's important. Students are presented with ideas on how data can be different, but still beneficial.
Lesson 2:
Independent, Dependent, & Control Variables
Students learn how scientists organize their data into different variables. They will get practice using the variables in a variety of problems with the teacher and on their own.
Lesson 3:
Graphing Data: Line Graphs, Bar Graphs & Pie Charts
Students are taught how to organize data in various ways to communicate information about their experiment. They will work alongside the teacher and go over examples before practicing on their own!
Lesson 4:
Density, Volume, & Mass
This lesson starts to introduce some of the most common units students will encounter in science. They will learn how to use different equations to get to their desired calculation.
