Class Experience

Students should know the basics of perimeter, area, surface area, and volume so they can consider real-life problems at the ball park. What's the area of a the jump-ball circle? What's the total area inside the 3-point shooting area? Students may share their favorite basketball arena with the class. Students will get beyond all the formulas they have learned for Geometry and see why they exist. They will gain a deeper understanding of the difference between square units and cubic units. They will see Geometry in a more fun light and gain a deeper appreciation for Geometry and Measurement. Geometry can often be overlooked for Middle Schoolers since it's often at the end of their books but State Tests require it.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to use the different formulas to calculate perimeter, area, surface area, and volume for various 2D and 3D shapes. They will also understand the importance of measurement units such as square units and cubic units. They will also learn how to convert from one measurement to another (such as from feet to yards). And practice their use of fractions and decimals.

I taught Geometry to both Middle-School and High School students for 10 years. I also created Geometry curriculum for Pearson Education and other publishers. Geometry can be overlooked as curriculum in Middle Grades as they are learning alot of Pre-Algebra. However, the State tests put alot of emphasis on Geometry and Measurement. It is such a visual and fun topic that students are missing out. You cannot revisit the topic of Geometry enough in Middle Grades.
