1 hour per week. Students will do their homework individually. However, that doesn't mean they cannot ask their peers for help. The classroom is available for any questions or discussion. Homework on average will be 1-2 hours long depending on the students reading ability. Reading may require twenty pages however this is not for every single week. Once I meet my student/ or students, I will gauge their abilities and assign homework accordingly.Assessment
Students are orally assessed.Class Experience
US Grade 8 - 11
Beginner Level
This course is taught through hands-on activities that involve discussions, model building, experiments, and worksheets. "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand."~Confucius This philosophy is my basis for teaching hands-on. Students remember best by designing models. Due to these classes involving labs, I do need ALL students to have their video cameras turned on. I can assist them by viewing what they are doing. I also would like a minimum of chatroom conversations. Students will learn through reading websites, diagrams, worksheets, questions, 2-6 minute YouTube videos (intermittent pauses to explain the concepts), and thought-provoking discussions about what we will learn: Classroom breakdown. 12-15 minutes on the topic. 30-35 minutes on the activity. Time frames can vary. My Classroom rules: Listen to the Teacher. No talking while Teacher Pat speaks. If you want to ask or answer a question; please raise your hand. Speak when your name is called. Unsure what to answer. State, I don't know or I need to pass. I prefer video cameras without background during class time. Limit chat room discussions. Enjoy learning Genetics! ***Please note that required reading will be assigned each week with various assignments.
Learning Goals
The goal is for the student to familiarize themselves with the origin of Genetics and the vocabulary used in the study of Genetics. Also, how we are using Genetics in medicine and developing better crops. They will also learn how we will be able to use it in the future. But the main goal of this course is to simplify what can be a difficult subject to learn.

Parental Guidance
Please note that Meiosis deals with the reproductive system work referring to YouTube. Reproductive systems will be mentioned in the worksheet or YouTube videos.
***There is a possibility that we may discuss how manipulating Genetics can be beneficial or harmful to our environment or society.
Topics will be human cloning and designer babies.
When doing the DNA Strawberry extraction, we will be using alcohol. This is hazardous to the eyes. Eyewear may be encouraged.
Pre-Requisites
Students should be able to read at the 7th grade level and follow instructions well.
Supply List
All lessons require a notebook and pencil to use for note-taking. Lesson 1 Let's learn about the Cell and it's function. Lab 1 Materials needed: 3 different color paper, glue stick, markers, and scissors Let's create a cell. Use three different color papers; one for each part of the cell. Cut out the template with scissors, glue together, and label the parts of the cell. Lesson 2 Lab 2 Materials needed: 2 slices of bread, peanut butter (any kind) and jelly We will make a model of the plasma membrane by making a P and J sandwich. Lesson 3 Materials needed: gummy bears or gumdrops (if neither; four different colors of playdoh can work) and a box of toothpicks. We will be building a double helix. Lesson 4 Materials: 3 large frozen or fresh strawberries, sandwich size ziplock bag, salt, Clear Dawn or 7th Generation dishwashing liquid seem to work the best, COLD 70% -90% isopropyl alcohol, coffee filters, a small funnel or strainer, a spoon, a cup, and a toothpick. Measuring spoons and cups will be needed to measure ingredients. Lesson 5 Materials: Whiteboard or paper; writing tool Students will learn to do a Punnett square. They will need their worksheet to read the genetic problem, they will be solving. Lesson 6 Dihybrid Crosses Lesson 7 Materials: Students will need to print out the templates for Mitosis. They will need two different color yarn or pipe cleaner pieces that are one inch in length. They need about 10 of each color. For Meiosis we will use two different color markers. Print the following: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1A2Nsg22-CZ1JPm_vLLp-Qlif2qna7jGqpn4NMa6upaM/edit?usp=sharing Lesson 8 Materials: 2 different markers and Meiosis template. Lesson 9 Materials: Whiteboard or paper; writing tool Students will learn to do a Punnett square. They will need their worksheet to read the genetic problem, they will be solving. Lesson 10 Materials: pipe cleaners, scissors, a sheet of computer paper, and tape. Lesson 11 Materials: a sheet of paper, bubble straw, pipe cleaners, scotch tape, and cardboard. Lesson 12 Materials: gummy bears, marshmallows, or gumdrops, and a box of toothpicks Lesson 13 Materials: Notebook and pencil. Lesson 14 Materials: Sketch pad, pencil, pink, blue, and purple markers.
