Intermediate Level
During this course, students will learn to utilize formulas and functions within Microsoft Excel. In order to benefit from this course, students only need a basic understand of Excel, like how to type in cells and select/highlight cells with their cursor/mouse. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸? This self-paced class features four 30-minute recordings and four 10-minute review activities. Each recording includes a hands-on Excel project, where I will share my screen to demonstrate tasks. Students should follow along on their computers for practical experience. We will imagine managing an online book and movie store, using a provided Excel file to create formulas and make business decisions. After each lesson, a review activity will reinforce the skills learned. I'll also discuss how the formulas and functions apply to other scenarios. If this class is purchased individually (not part of Outschool Unlimted), students have access to the teacher to ask questions and will receive feedback on all questions and submitted work. Please see the "𝙎𝙮𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙪𝙨" section for a detailed breakdown of what is included in each lesson. Syllabus
8 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
The Basics and Math Formulas: Video and Follow-Along
I'll begin by briefly discussing real-world uses for Excel and related vocabulary. I'll define "static" and "cell reference" formulas and discuss the benefits of cell reference formulas. We'll then dive in and begin using the program. We'll create basic math formulas, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and exponents. I'll then discuss how "dragging" a formula effects the formula and how the formula can be changed to allow for auto-populating. We'll use the SUM function.
Lesson 2:
Quick Review Exercise: Adding Lines and Extending Formulas
For additional practice, learners will share a book that is not already in our bookstore "inventory" and add it to their inventory spreadsheet.
Lesson 3:
More Summarizing Formulas: Video and Follow-Along
We'll continue to use our "business's" sales data to practice using formulas. We'll use the COUNT function to total transactions, and the RANK function to rank our most popular items. We'll use Excel functions to calculate our average transaction size. We'll also determine the MEDIAN and MODE transaction values and I'll discuss why these formulas would be helpful. We'll look at a customer birthday list and use date functions to split information into different cells.
Lesson 4:
Quick Review Exercise: Uses of Excel
The learner will share in what other ways they may need to use an Excel function or formula.
