A love of reading is a skill that will last for life. Learners will grow in appreciation for stories and words. In each class I will introduce the first story with a question, i.e. Do you like puppies? Today we are going to read a story about 101 Dalmatian puppies! I will then read the book 101 Dalmatians. While I read there will be a power point playing with pictures from the book I am reading. Students are also invited to draw a picture of what the story is about while I am reading. After the book, I will ask follow up questions, like, Which character was your favorite? I will then introduce the second book in a similar manner i.e. Have you ever been to a zoo? Then I will read Chip and Dale at The Zoo, following up with questions about the story, such as, What was your favorite part of that story? Finally at the end of class, I will go over two different vocabulary words used in the stories we have just read, by putting them on a white board or on the power point and using each in a different sentence. Students will have an opportunity to use the word in a sentence. My teaching style is very friendly and fun. Class 1: Mickey Mouse and Pluto Pup, and Bambi Gets Lost. Vocab: glad & pad. (-ad sound practice) Class 2: The Princess Who Never Laughed, and The Golden Goose. Vocab: fish & bush. (-sh sound practice) Class 3: 101 Dalmatians and Chip and Dale at The Zoo. Vocab: spots & nuts. (o and u sound practice) Class 4: Dumbo, On Land, On Sea, In the Air and Donald Prize Driver. Vocab: onto & over. (understanding the differences between onto& over) Class 5: The Jungle Book and Mickey Mouse's Picnic. Vocab: in & under. (understanding the differences between in & under) Class 6: The Little Red Hen, and Donald and The Toy Sailboat. Vocab: boat & book. (-oa and -oo sound practice) The emphasis is on fun and enjoying the story, with a little bit of learning new words and practicing reading thrown in. I will ask some questions about the stories, but no one will feel like they have to answer if they just want to listen. Learners will have opportunities to ask questions at different times during the class. By the end of the class, students should have an increased love of stories and an increased understanding of the words and sounds that we practice. There is no special knowledge needed for this class, but younger students should be able to listen to a story.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their listening skills and improve understanding of the phonics sounds and vocabulary words we read together. The main goal is to have fun and enjoy the story.
