Is your young Spanish-speaker ready to explore how letter sounds work together in written text? This class is designed for young children who are already advanced* in Spanish but not yet reading or just starting to learn. It will be helpful if they are familiar with the vowel sounds A, E, I, O, and U in Spanish, but they may or may not feel confident in these yet. We will practice the sounds together before using them in syllables with M and in a simple reader. 1. Playfully review vowel sounds in Spanish. 2. Practice sounding out the syllables ma, me, mi, mo, and mu. 3. Play a memory game with these syllables. 4. Listen and watch as the teacher models reading the reader (created by the instructor) with the sounds we reviewed. (We may skip this step for learners who already feel comfortable reading the book without much help.) 5. Take turns reading parts or all of the book depending on students' level and what they feel comfortable with. 6. If time permits, practice writing with the letters we have worked on, play an additional syllable game, and/or read another beginning reader created the teacher. *These students may be--for example--heritage speakers, children who have attended an immersion preschool, or "life-time speakers" with a parent or caregiver who has spoken to them in Spanish since infancy. After class, the teacher will provide several optional follow-up materials, including a printable version of the reader from class for students to practice reading further, two worksheets, and a printable version of the memory game.
