Class Experience

During this class, students will explore Day of the Dead, a popular festival of Mexico. We’ll celebrate this day by drawing a Travel Girl wearing a “La Catrina” costume. La Catrina is the famous skeleton woman seen in many Day of the Dead artwork and celebrations. Students of all drawing abilities are able to enjoy this class as the Travel Girl is drawn using shapes and lines.
In addition, this is a great way to Hispanic / Latinx Heritage Month.

The class will begin with an introduction to the basic facts about Day of the Dead (origin, food, music, art and pop culture) to get students familiar with this Mexican holiday.

Next, students will look more closely at “La Catrina” and decide color and patterns to draw on her face. Students will also decide what other festival/cultural aspect to include in the drawing, for example, a flowers, alter or a traditional fan. By the end of the hour, students will have a beautiful Travel Girl drawing and know more about Day of the Dead as it relates to modern day celebrations. As the teacher, I will guide students to create a unique drawing that reflects their personalities and curiosity about La Catrina.

Upon enrolling in this class, students will receive a pre-lesson activity; students should complete the boarding pass for the Bon Voyage travel to Mexico. Also, you will find a basic fact sheet about Day of the Dead and Bon Voyage Travel Girl.
Learning Goals
Students will develop a basic understanding of the culture of Day of the Dead by exploring essential facts about the Mexican celebration. Also, students will improve their drawing ability by using common shapes to create a personalized Travel Girl wearing a “La Catrina" costume.

I am passionate about teaching appreciation of our world's cultures, societies, and people in a fun and engaging way that will spark a lifelong curiosity about our global community and a desire to be active and productive community members. I would like to work with learners from 6 to 18 years old. I have a degree in Sociology from UCLA, visited more than 30 countries, and lived/taught in five countries. I love to explore our global community from teas to art to traditional clothing.

Since 2005, I have taught English as a foreign language. I have taught in Asia, Central America, South America and North America. I have taught all age levels from young learners to middle school students to college students. For the past five years, I have been teaching English online to very young learners in China.

I believe learning should be fun, interactive and relevant to students' lives. Students should be inspired and encouraged to be active learners and full participants in developing their knowledge of the world.

On a personal note, I have two big dreams that I'm pursuing now. The first is to live in London for a year as a writer. Because of the Covid pandemic, I am not sure when this will happen. The second is to publish The Next Great American Novel. (I have a Master's degree in Nonfiction Writing from USC.)
