Message Time Magic - Literacy Skills for Kinder Kids
What's included

This class is an excellent addition to a pre-k or kindergarten circle time class. We will begin with introductions and greetings which will be followed by sharing items that begin with the letter of the day. The teacher will then write, while reading, the theme-related message on the board as the students follow along. The message will consist of one to three sentences that can be a statement and/or question about the week’s theme. There will be one letter and at least two high-frequency words in each message that are posted and highlighted in each lesson. Depending on the theme, the teacher may show different artifacts, items, pictures, or photos to engage students. After the message is written the students will all read the message together. Following the first group reading of the message, each child will have a few turns to choose a letter, word, or punctuation mark in the message. The teacher will circle the letters, box the words, and put a triangle around the punctuation mark(s). After everyone has had a turn, the class will read the message again. We will play a quick phonics game and practice writing the featured letter together, discuss the theme, and end class with a good-bye song. I love message time, and I have used this strategy for teaching letters and sight words my entire teaching career. I am super excited to bring a variety of themes into our daily message along with various items to keep children engaged and surprised. Learning should be FUN! You can sign up for each week as you like because random letters and high-frequency words are planned out in each message and letters are repeated more than once. High-frequency words are taken from the Dolch Pre-Primer and Primer word lists and will occur at least once as a featured HF word within the thirteen weeks. Weekly Themes: Sept. 13 – monarch butterflies Sept. 20 – trees Sept. 27 – apples Oct. 4 – fall/autumn leaves Oct. 11 – spiders Oct. 18 – pumpkins Oct. 25 – jelly and jam Nov. 1 - (No classes this week) Nov. 8 – (No classes this week) Nov. 15 – trains Nov. 22 – airplanes Nov. 29 – cars Dec. 6– animals that hibernate Dec. 13 – snow Dec. 20 – winter Note to adults: This class is appropriate for children who are beginner readers (typically in preschool or kindergarten) and know a few letter names or know all of the letter names but not all of the letter sounds. It is also a great class for English Language Learners. If your child is reading and knows all of the letter names and sounds and many high-frequency words, then this class may not be challenging enough for your child. You are welcome to sit with your child off-camera for the lesson. If your child misses a class, the recording will be available.
Learning Goals
Students will identify letter names and sounds, high-frequency words, and punctuation marks, while also learning strategies for beginning reading and writing. Students will also learn information related to the weekly theme.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello families! My name is Kathy Eachus, and I have been an early childhood educator for twenty fun-filled years, teaching kindergarten and Pre-K. There is never a dull moment with the little ones, and I like to keep us busy with creative lessons that are hands-on and include lots of conversation. I have my Masters in Elementary Education and certifications from the state of New Jersey in Elementary Education, Preschool through Grade 3, and Reading. I also have a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I enjoy teaching all subjects to children ages 3 to 6, especially literacy skills to my early learners to help them progress with beginning reading and writing.
Besides the literacy and math I teach in my classes, I also list several drawing classes on Outschool. These classes are just so much fun for me because I just love seeing the smile on a child's face when they post their final picture in the classroom once they are all finished painting or coloring.
Beyond the classroom, I love to travel and have been fortunate to visit all 50 states and 14 countries. I minored in geography and enjoy reading maps and learning about other places around the world. My husband and I love spending time in Slovenia and we are also trying to visit all of the National Parks in the United States. My daughter and I are also Disney geeks and have been to all of the parks except Hong Kong and Shanghai Disneyland. We hope to get there someday.
I hope to meet your child for a fun-filled lesson. Learning should always be interesting and enjoyable for children. See you in class!
Note: I am currently not listing classes for the remainder of 2023. See you in 2024.
