This lesson covers most types of word problems for senior elementary students (G3-G5). Your child will learn the bar modelling, analytical thinking skills for solving all the ten-types of problems during 2 week intensive study.

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Sum and Difference using Bar Models
Using bar model to draw the word problems related to sum and differences. Extension to multiples and fractions will also be introduced.
Lesson 2
Intervals Problems
Intervals in different synarios. Students will learned how to solve interval problems regarding interval size, interval numbers, total length, etc.
Lesson 3
Chicken and Rabbit Problems
This is a classical type of problems on sum and differences. We will learn how to solve this type of problems through making a list, a guess, and an assumption.
Lesson 4
Excess-and-Shortage Problems
Students will learn how to solve this type of problem with identifying total differences and difference on each, with questions from different perspectives.
Lesson 5
Speed: Catching-Up Problems
In this lesson, to identify distance, speed, relative speed, and time will be taught. Student will master both the reasoning and graphing skills.
 Week 2
Lesson 6
Speed: Encountering Problems
With different directions of travelling, this lesson will focus more on encountering, with further explanation of speed and directions.
Lesson 7
Age Problems
Age in current, past, and future years will be asked in various practical problems, based on the differences. Students will master the skills with reasoning thinking.
Lesson 8
Page Problems
Digit, page number, sums, multiples, speed, days will be appeared in the page numbers. Students will learn the logic thinking skills for solving the page problems.
Lesson 9
Comparison and Replacement
This is the basic of shape equations. Students will learn the comparison and replacement skills to solve the practical problems or the shape equations,
Lesson 10
Counting
Counting numbers of 2D or 3D shapes in one figure. This is practical of reasoning, and analytical thinking.
  • By the end of this lesson, students will have mastered bar modeling and analytical thinking skills to confidently solve all ten types of word problems commonly encountered in senior elementary math.
