Course Overview:
This 2-week intensive course is designed for senior elementary students (Grades 3-5) to master mental math strategies and problem-solving skills. The course will cover various types of word problems, emphasizing bar modeling and analytical thinking. Each session will be conducted in a small group setting (1-3 students) to ensure personalized attention and effective learning.

What will be taught?
Bar modeling techniques for visualizing and solving word problems.
Analytical thinking skills to approach and solve different types of problems.
Strategies to solve all ten types of word problems commonly encountered in elementary math.

Class Structure:
Each session will last for 50 minutes, consisting of:
Lecture and Explanation: A brief lecture to introduce the day’s topic, followed by detailed explanations of key concepts.
Interactive Problem Solving: Hands-on practice with word problems, encouraging students to apply bar modeling and analytical thinking.
Discussion and Feedback: Interactive discussions to clarify doubts and reinforce learning. Students will receive immediate feedback on their problem-solving approaches.

Teaching Style:
The teaching style is highly interactive and student-centered, focusing on active participation and engagement. The PhD teacher uses a variety of instructional methods, including penpad presentation, group discussion, games and interactive activities.

Interaction:
Students will have ample opportunities to interact with the teacher and their peers. The small group setting ensures that each student receives individual attention and support. Lesson 1:
Sum and Difference using Bar Models
 Using bar model to draw the word problems related to sum and differences. Extension to multiples and fractions will also be introduced.

Intervals Problems
 Intervals in different synarios. Students will learned how to solve interval problems regarding interval size, interval numbers, total length, etc.

Lesson 3:
Chicken and Rabbit Problems
 This is a classical type of problems on sum and differences. We will learn how to solve this type of problems through making a list, a guess, and an assumption.

Excess-and-Shortage Problems
 Students will learn how to solve this type of problem with identifying total differences and difference on each, with questions from different perspectives.
