Mental Math Number Skills: Solve the Mystery Puzzle! (Grade 1 Ongoing Class)

These fun weekly classes focus on developing and strengthening students’ mental math skills. Each week, we will practice a new skill. Class will begin with a brief lesson to review the target objective. Students will then be given a link to access a Google Sheets worksheet, containing twenty problems to solve. Please note that no sign-in is required for students to access their Google Sheets worksheet, and they will each work on their own copy. With each correct answer, students will get closer to solving the mystery puzzle picture of the week! 

The lessons are independent of each other, and students may join at any time. They are best suited for children working at a Grade 1 math level, as well as for those who would benefit from review and practice of previously learnt skills. 

* Please note: Students will need to work on a laptop or desktop to complete this task!*

**I aim to make my classes a positive and supportive environment, where we can all have fun through learning. Although the aim is for students to work out the problems in their head, those who are still working on their confidence with their mental math skills are so welcome to have a dry-erase whiteboard (9 by 12 inches or lap size would be perfect), a few colored dry-erase whiteboard markers and a board eraser or cloth to work with when needed. Alternatively, paper and markers would do just as well. My primary aim for these classes is for students to develop their number skill and accuracy, and feel comfortable and have fun whilst doing this! The more we practice these super important skills, the better we get at them, and soon enough children retain the knowledge they need and no longer require a whiteboard or paper :-). **

•	Multiple subtrahends (within 20)

Week 4 (beginning Monday 1 March 2021):
•	Mixed operations (to 20)

Week 5 (beginning Monday 8 March 2021):
•	Adding multiples of 10s and single-digit numbers

•	Subtracting multiples of 10s and single-digit numbers
