Homework
1-2 hours per week. Homework. Abacus exercises - done solely on the physical abacus to improve visual memory, finger-brain connection and number framing. Abacus practice- 30-50 math problems for the week. If it's 10-15 a day three days a week it will make a HUGE difference for the student in acquiring the skills of mental arithmetic. Mental math practice- will be given at hte end on the course to maintain the learned skills and practice. It is parents' responsibility to make sure the homework is accomplished during the week and students practice thoroughly. Each week's class is based on the previous skill. If a student hasn't done homework (which will be checked weekly) and is struggling to understand the new skill during the class, teacher won't be able to individually help the student to catch up while others are on track with their homework and skills.
Assessment
Week 2, 3, 4 and 5 have individual practice/assignments that will show how well the skills from the previous week's class acquired.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Basic counting on Soroban. Addition- Subtraction.

Week 1. The course starts with introduction of the abacus, its structure and the right way to move the beads. Children will enjoy special exercises on the abacus when introduced numbers 1-5 on the rods of different value ( ones, tens, hundreds). They will practice doing 3-4-action math problems on the abacus. As well as playing "speed math" on the abacus. And at the end drawing their own mental map of the abacus. Homework: finger exercises and 30-50 math problems to be done on the abacus.

Week 2. Practice of 4-5-action math problems on the abacus ( single and double digits). Introduction of numbers 6-7 on the rods of different value ( ones, tens, hundreds). Abacus exercises with numbers 6-7. Abacus practice of the new skill - math problems single and double digits for numbers 1-7. Homework: finger exercises and 30-50 math problems to be done on the abacus.

Week 3. Practice of 4-5-action math problems on the abacus ( single and double digits). Introduction of numbers 8-9 on the rods of different value ( ones, tens, hundreds). Abacus exercises with numbers 8-9. Abacus practice of the new skill - math problems single and double digits for numbers 1-9. Homework: finger exercises and 30-50 math problems to be done on the abacus.

Week 4. Practice of mixed numbers 1-9 in 3-4-action math problems (single, double digits). "Speed math" exercise on abacus with numbers 1-9 as a competition. "Speed Mental Math" exercise on their own mental maps of the abacus. Homework: 30 mental math problems + 30 abacus practice math problems.

Week 5. Warm up - mixed numbers 1-9 ( single, double). "Speed math" exercise on abacus with numbers 1-9 as a competition. "Speed Mental Math" exercise on their own mental maps of the abacus. We're talking about hundreds! Children will be introduced to hundreds' rod! ( It is exciting to try it out and work on it more thoroughly in the following course Level 2.)

Level "Basic Counting on Soroban" is done! Woohooo!

Disclaimer: it is parents' responsibility to make sure the homework is accomplished during the week and students practice thoroughly. Each week's new class is based on the previous skill. If a student hasn't done homework and/or didn't follow the instructions (which will be checked weekly) and is struggling to understand the new skill during the class, teacher won't be able to individually help the student to catch up while others are on track with their homework and skills. If you have any questions on homework during the week, feel free to reach out.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of mental arithmetic and will be introduced to a new framing of the numbers that is very different from what they know but allows them to understand the numbers faster and better.
We will take calculations with the numbers 1-99. We'll start slowly and progress as we learn new skills, do our homework and practice in class.
By the end of the course students will be able to visualize abacus and do 3-5-action math problems in their mind and at a quicker pace.
