US Grade 4 - 6
Learners are to read the book in its entirety before coming to class. We will not be reading the book in class, but simply discussing the book. This class will meet every other week. We will discuss one book per session. Learners do not need to attend previous sessions, as the classes do not build on each other. Adult helpers should preview and approve each book before participating in each session. If you do not wish to participate in a particular book session, please be sure to withdraw from the class before Sunday, when Outschool renews your subscription. **This is an active discussion class, not a lecture. Please be prepared to discuss your thoughts on the book. This is a fun, light discussion where we will enjoy chatting about the books - this is not an in-depth book study. Watching the movie does not count. This is a book club. There are details in the book that are not in the movie. Same with reading summary notes in place of the book. Reading the actual book is required, no replacement is acceptable. Questions we might ask: What would you do if you were in that situation? Would you do the same thing as the character? What was your favorite part of the book? Favorite character? Learners do not need to be in Mensa to complete this reading list as stated here: https://www.mensaforkids.org/achieve/excellence-in-reading/ Please print out the list in order to fill the list out. When the list is complete, it may be sent in to MENSA to receive a certificate and a t-shirt. Here is the book list for 4-6: https://www.mensaforkids.org/achieve/excellence-in-reading/excellence-in-reading-4-6-list/ This class will be ongoing to complete the entire book list, at which point it will then repeat. There are 62 books on the 4-6 list. Required texts - the versions do not matter. The ISBN listed is for the copy that I have. However, as we are not reading from the book in class, the specific version does not matter and you may use any version or copy. I do hold a current K-8 Education teacher's certificate and am qualified to teach these books to this age group. This class will be held every other week to allow the learner time to complete the book. Schedule (We will go down the list of books in order. The schedule will be updated regularly). **Please note the ISBN is for the version that I have. You can use a different version, but the vocabulary on the optional worksheet might be different.** June 12, 2023 - The Complete Fairy Tales (Charles Perrault) June 26, 2023 - The Dark is Rising Sequence: Over Sea, Under Stone (Susan Cooper) July 10, 2023 - The Dark is Rising Sequence: The Dark Is Rising (Susan Cooper) July 24, 2023 - The Dark is Rising Sequence: Greenwitch (Susan Cooper) August 7, 2023 - The Dark is Rising Sequence: The Grey King (Susan Cooper) August 21, 2023 - The Dark is Rising Sequence: Silver on the Tree (Susan Cooper)
