Class Experience
In this course, students will practice using their beginning-level Indonesian skills to start conversations and share about themselves. There will be an emphasis on really using the language to communicate, rather than on rote utterances. I will use visual aids, body movement, comic strips, and dialogues with puppets to teach students new vocabulary and how to deepen their communication. This class will involve lots of interaction and repetition to help students master the vocabulary and...
Students will learn and practice the following communicative situations: initiating relationships, asking for things, expressing likes and dislikes, and describing here-and-now activities. Students will review and expand their Indonesian vocabulary. Students will understand and use pronouns with greater precision.
I have 7 years experience living in Indonesia, including two years of intensive, full-time language study. I have studied language acquisition and linguistics as part of my degree in Intercultural Studies as well as during my time in Indonesia, and I bring a research-informed, linguistic perspective to language classes.
Learners are strongly encouraged to continue practicing Indonesian throughout the week. Practice videos will be provided.
I will provide handouts of pictures, charts, or diagrams as needed. Students will also be asked to bring items to class to use as props, such as a favorite snack, family picture, or item used in their hobby.
Informal assessment will be ongoing. Written feedback may be provided upon request.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
