US Grade 5 - 7
In this class your student will memorize "My Shadow" by Robert Louis Stevenson and "Mr Nobody" by anonymous. Classes will be lively and engaging with tips and tricks for memorizing the poem, but also these tips and tricks can easily be incorporated into other passages students want to memorize. Reviewing is an important key to memorizing so students will also be given tips and tricks on how to seamlessly incorporate reviewing into their daily schedule. Students will be given a chance to recite the poem during class and encouraged to recite it outside of class to a friend or family member. We will spend a brief amount of time talking about the author and the basic meaning of the poem. Each poem should roughly take 4 weeks to memorize. I will provide drawings and hand motions to help students learn through auditory, visual, and kinetic methods. Students will need to review the poem outside of class to help them retain the memorized portion from week to week. I will teach them how to do that without needing to alter their daily schedule or add one more thing into their day. My review method is pretty seamless and can be incorporated into your existing daily schedule. Classes are lighthearted and fun. Students will look forward to coming to class each week. Students will receive only encouragement and support if they get stuck or had an "off week." The schedule is not too intense so that if a student gets behind, it will be easy to catch up with the rest of the class. Week 1 - First 4 lines of My Shadow and learn about Robert Stevenson Week 2 - Next 4 lines of My Shadow Week 3 - Next 4 lines of My Shadow Week 4 - Last 4 lines of My Shadow Week 5 - I know a funny little man, As quiet as a mouse, Who does the mischief that is done In everybody’s house! There’s no one ever sees his face, And yet we all agree That every plate we break was cracked By Mr. Nobody. Week 6 - ’Tis he who always tears out books, Who leaves the door ajar, He pulls the buttons from our shirts, And scatters pins afar; That squeaking door will always squeak, For prithee, don’t you see, We leave the oiling to be done By Mr. Nobody. Week 7 - He puts damp wood upon the fire That kettles cannot boil; His are the feet that bring in mud, And all the carpets soil. The papers always are mislaid; Who had them last, but he? There’s no one tosses them about But Mr. Nobody. Week 8 - The finger marks upon the door By none of us are made; We never leave the blinds unclosed, To let the curtains fade. The ink we never spill; the boots That lying round you see Are not our boots,—they all belong To Mr. Nobody.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Michigan Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hi! I'm teacher Veronica. I've been teaching for over 20 years. I’ve taught in both brick-and-mortar classrooms as well as online. I’ve been homeschooling my children since they were in kindergarten. I LOVE to memorize. I started memorizing large passages in 2010 and it's become an addiction with me. I'm offering classes that teach students how to memorize using classic poems. Not only does your child walk away with a poem memorized but more importantly he/she is learning a life-long skill of how to memorize and retain the passage. I'm also enjoying creating classes on problem solving. In these classes, students enjoy solving a mystery, but more importantly I'm teaching them how to think critically and ask questions. I'm laying a foundation of what problem solving looks like and how it can be used in our every day lives. My husband and I lived in Alaska for 18 years with our three children. We now reside in Michigan with our kids, one cat and one dog. One of my favorite things to do is walk around our neighborhood with my husband and enjoy the beauty. In Alaska we even walked when it was -30 degrees.
