Description

Class Experience

In this 12-week FLEX course, students will take a learning adventure throughout our Solar System & will be able to:
1.	Compare & Contrast the planets in our Solar System.
2.	Discuss the Earth & her Moon and how they are unique from other planets and moons.
3.	Explain the Order of our Solar System, including the unique objects found within it.
4.	Identify various Subjects of Study and Training needed by Astronauts.
5.	Compare and Contrast the various Types of Spacecraft & man-made objects sent into space.
6.	Explore outside of our Solar System.
7.	Apply knowledge by Creating a Space Adventure Class Project.
I have always had a love of space, from the moment my grandpa, an amateur astronomer, let me look through the 10-foot telescope he built all by himself, to watching shuttles & satellites lift into the sky, and watching some fall back to the earth. I have spotted some of the largest dust storms to hit Mars, and have enjoyed looking at the various craters on our Moon and seeing the rings around Saturn, all from my own backyard in Missouri & while using other telescopes my grandpa built. I have never ceased my exploration and search, looking to the skies to watch for eclipses, comets, and so much more! My love of all things Space has only increased with time, and I feel it is the next great wave of the future! As a teacher with a Master’s Degree in Teaching & over 30 years of experience working with children of various ages, and more than 5 years teaching students about Space, as well as other Science-related subject-matter, I love sharing my knowledge with the next generation. My hope is to instill the awe-inspiring beauty the Unknown Universe holds, as well as encourage students to dream and believe! I hope to see you in class as we take on this Mega Space Mission!
Each week students will be given a video lecture, with additional video sources, a variety of discussion and/or comprehension questions, review games, vocabulary lists, and other materials & resources to aid in the learning process. Students will be challenged to complete 2 separate discussion questions each week & then to reply and/or converse with their fellow classmates about the topic as well.
Weekly discussion posts will be posted each Sunday & learners are encouraged to answer each, as well as respond to at least one of their fellow classmates. Although, the goal is to have as much interaction as possible between learners. Here is a list of weekly topics students will utilize to engage in conversation & learning with their fellow classmates:
Week 1: 
Class Post #1: Class Poll: Learners will take a poll about our Sun, the gases it is made from, the Layers, which layer we can see & which layer is responsible for sending out Solar Winds, etc.
Class Post #2: Let’s tell a Story together. The teacher will start our story line and each student will add to the story with their own ideas and storyline about the Sun & its 7 Layers. Each student will add on to our Class Story about traveling to the Sun throughout the week.
The starter for this interactive story-building is:
“Let’s go on a tour of the Sun, class! Jump onboard our spacecraft, and be sure to bring your toothbrush! Oh yeah, don’t forget your spacesuit! Hear that countdown…we are ready to takeoff”
*Be sure to read all the story added before posting your individual part. Feel free to make this funny & creative!
Class Post #3: After reviewing the notes & videos about the Types of Stars/Life Cycle of Stars, tell the class in a short post which type of star you found most interesting and why (be sure to support your answer with details and/or facts). 
*Remember to take Quiz #1 after playing the review games. 

Week 2:
Class Post #4: On our joint, class Padlet for this lesson, in your own words, explain the difference between a Solar System, a Galaxy and the Universe & then tell us which of these you feel is the most spectacular, and why?
Class Post #5: After reviewing the notes & videos about Mercury & Venus, let’s build a Venn Diagram together as each learner add information about these 2 planets, showing how they are similar & different.

Week 3:
Class Post #6: After reviewing the notes & videos about Earth & her Moon, use the link provided in the Outschool Classroom to create a short Flipgrid video response to this discussion question: List 3 things that you think make our Earth unique or special. (try to not repeat things discussed by other students in their videos)
Class Post #7: After reviewing the ‘Layers of the Earth’, take the Class Poll which asks the question, “If you could live on any other layer of the Earth, what layer would it be?” Then write a quick reason why you chose that layer in the ‘Comments’.
Class Post #8: After reviewing the notes & videos about Earth & her moon, using the Flipgrid link provided in the classroom, record a short video of you telling your best friend something important you learned about either Earth’s Magnetosphere, Gravity, or the Moon. (Be sure to not repeat anything your classmates have already said in their videos).

Week 4:
Class Post #9: After reviewing the notes & videos about Mars & The Terrestrial Planets, let’s build a huge Venn Diagram together. Use the Class Link provided to add to the Venn Diagram. We should have a total of at least 4 interesting things about Mercury, Venus, Earth & Mars that makes them different from the other Terrestrial Planets. Then students will also find several ways these Terrestrial Planets are the same, listing these out in the Venn Diagram. Teacher will share the finished product in the classroom. 
Class Post #10: Write a letter to NASA & tell them what you think, answering the following questions: Do you think humans should try to build a human colony on Mars? Why/for what purpose? Do you think we will ever find life or proof of past life on Mars? If so, why? If not, why? Then, pretend to be a NASA scientist and respond to ONE of your classmates’ letters, addressing their concerns and/or comments. 
*Remember to take Test #1 after playing the review games.

Week 5:
Class Post #11: After reviewing the notes & videos about The Jovian Planets, Jupiter & Saturn, add to the Class Jamboard by listing at least one thing for each planet that make them unique in our Solar System. Then, in the comments for this post, tell the class, “If you could travel to Jupiter or Saturn, which one would you choose, and why?”
Class Post #12: This week, we learned about the Cassini, which orbited Saturn almost 300 times all the while taking readings and pictures & sending data back to Earth. Using a search engine of your choice (Google, Bing, etc.) find an interesting picture either of the Cassini or taken by the Cassini and post it to the Comments, then tell your classmates, “Why do you think it is important to explore the planets in our solar system? Should we focus on other planets and/or bodies as well? Where would you like to see us send the next spacecraft and why?”

Week 6:
Class Post #13: After reviewing the notes & videos about The Jovian Planets, Uranus & Neptune, use the Flipgrid link provided in the classroom to record a short video of you telling your grandparents or parents something important you learned about each of these & then tell them which one you would like to travel to & why.

Class Post #14: Discussion #12: After reviewing the notes & videos about The Jovian Planets, let’s build a huge Venn Diagram together. Use the Class Link provided to add to the Venn Diagram. We should have a total of at least 4 interesting things about Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune that makes them different from the other Jovian Planets. Then students will also find several ways these Jovian Planets are the same, listing these out in the Venn Diagram. Teacher will share the finished product in the classroom.

Week 7:
Class Post #15: After reviewing the notes & videos about Black Holes, Comets, Meteoroids, Meteors, Meteorites, & The Main Asteroid Belt, using the Flipgrid link provided in the classroom, define each of these in your own words as if you were going to teach it or explain it to a younger brother, sister or cousin. (Remember to try and make it your own explanation for these & feel free to make it fun!)  
Class Post #16: In our lecture, we discuss how one could become rich if they find a cool meteorite. Take the Search Challenge by finding one person who found & sold, or is trying to sell a meteorite. Tell where they found it, how much they sold it for, and if you can find any details about what the meteorite was made of, or other interesting information, please include it. Important: do not copy someone else’s find! Try to find your own person. If you can post a picture of it, that would be amazing too! Use the search engines (such as Google, Etsy, eBay, Bing, etc.).

Week 8:
Class Post #17: After reviewing the notes & videos about other objects in our Solar System, such as The Oort Cloud, Kuiper Belt & Dwarf Planets, Order of our Solar System, using the Google Jamboard, let’s Draw our Solar System. Each learner will draw at least one area on the Google Jamboard, to include all the above objects in our Solar System, plus the Sun & 8 Main Planets.
Class Post #18: Ask your classmates one question about either the Oort Cloud or Kuiper Belt. Remember to go through your classmate’s questions and try to answer at least one of them. (Please do not copy your classmate’s questions, but take this opportunity to come up with some original questions & answers).

Week 9: 
Class Post #19: My best friend wants to be an Astronaut!
After reviewing the notes & videos about Astronauts, use the Flipgrid link provided to record a short video explaining how he/she can become an astronaut. Answer the following questions: a) What are 3 things you can do right now to help you better prepare for a career as an astronaut? B) What should I study in college? (Be specific here & try to not copy your classmates’ answers from their videos). 
Class Post #20: Write a letter to NASA as if you are the most important Astronaut they have & request a mission. Tell them the area of space, planet, moon, etc. you would love to travel to; What you think you will discover there; and ask them to send you there by telling them if you believe there be life or other mysterious things there. 
Then respond to at least one classmate’s letter to NASA by pretending to be on the NASA board which determines missions & let them know if you have approved their requested mission & why.
After playing the review games, remember to take Test #2.

Week 10: 
Class Post #21: After reviewing the notes & videos about Man-made Objects in Space, tell the class what you think is the most important man-made object we currently have in space and why you think/feel that way. 
Class Post #22: Let’s tell a Story together. The teacher will start our story line and each student will add to the story with their own ideas and storyline about the man-made objects in space. Each student will add on to our Class Story about these mand-made objects & what could happen with the more than 100,000 pieces of space junk, satellites, space stations, etc. orbiting our Earth.
The starter for this interactive story-building is:
“Oh, my goodness, what is that falling from the sky? Hurry, my astronaut friends, let’s find out! We must go up through the Earth’s atmosphere & into space to see what is happening & why things are falling down to Earth. Hear that countdown…5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Blast-off!”
*Be sure to read all the story added before posting your individual part. Feel free to make this funny & creative!

Week 11:
Class Post #23: After reviewing the notes & videos about the things outside our Solar System, such as Exoplanets, use the Flipgrid link provided in the classroom to create a quick video telling the class what you think is the most important thing we have discovered about space in this course. Why is this the most important (support your answer with at least 2 facts). Then tell us where you think we should focus our time and attention on for our next space adventure and why (support your answer with at least 2 reasons).
Class Post #24: Check out the list of Exoplanets on Nasa’s website (https://exoplanets.nasa.gov/exoplanet-catalog/) and choose one to post about in the Classroom. Get a picture of it & tell one or two really interesting things about this planet, as well as its name. (Note: this may be chosen as our Class Project planet during our last week). Afterwards, read through your classmates’ posts and rank which Exoplanets are the Coolest (give them a 1-10 ranking with 1 being the most awesome and ten being the least impressive). 

Week 12:
Class Post #25: This week we are completing our Space Adventure-Summary Project. The teacher has posted a Poll which needs to be taken before Monday of this week. It is asking which of the Exoplanets we discussed in Week 11 is the best choice for our Space Adventure Class Project we will be working on. Please complete this before Monday so we can begin our joint, class project where we will all find information about this planet.
Class Post #26: Space Adventure Summary Project: After voting on which exoplanet we want to visit as a class, each student will be given an outline with specific requirements for their part in our Space Adventure, which will be completed during the last week of class. The teacher will share a Google Slide Presentation with the students, who will then add in their part of the project directly to it. The finished copy will be uploaded to the classroom before the last day of class.

Any learning materials needed will be available for download in the Outschool classroom.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will apply the learning & knowledge gained during this course by Creating a Space Adventure Class Project, which will assess students’ overall understanding and ability in the areas covered.
*This course is not a graded course, however, quizzes, tests and a course project will be assigned to learners. Copies of the graded quizzes & tests can be supplied upon request. 
No live meetings, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Various website will be utilized by the teacher during the presentation of material, including those for game-based and visual learning. Teacher will have lessons and assignments, posted at the beginning of each week in the classroom, which will be downloadable.
Nasa.gov will be used.
