Want to take a sewing class but don't know the first thing about your machine? Take this class! You will get well acquainted with your sewing machine, how it works, and all of it's main parts so you can get started with sewing on your own or just to feel more comfortable taking another sewing class. Students should come to class with their sewing machine plugged in and ready to study! Please have a spool of thread and a bobbin nearby. The teacher will be using a Brother CE1125PRW for reference but all machines will be able to be used. ***Please note: "Mini" sewing machines or kid sewing machines should not be used for this class as their designs are completely different than a standard machine. Please refer to your owner's manual for guidance on how to use your specific machine. I also offer the following flexible schedule courses for an introduction to machine sewing: ▶Ages 6-9 Intro to Machine Sewing: https://outschool.com/classes/flex-intro-to-machine-sewing-for-kids-ilAQO4ai?usid=N36OSZ12&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link ▶Ages 10-12 Intro to Machine Sewing: https://outschool.com/classes/flex-intro-to-machine-sewing-for-pre-teens-KncelGgA?usid=N36OSZ12&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link ▶Ages 13-16 Intro to Machine Sewing: https://outschool.com/classes/flex-intro-to-machine-sewing-for-teens-SrI9MPXE?usid=N36OSZ12&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link ⭐Once completing this "Meet Your Machine" course, you will be given a 20% off coupon code for your child to take one of these flexible schedule courses Structure of this class. 1. Each student will show the teacher their sewing machine. Please have the owner's manual on hand so the teacher can help with machine specific technicalities during the lesson if needed. (5 mins) 3. The teacher will have a second camera shown on a sewing machine as each part is identified and named on the machine. Each student will locate the corresponding part on their machine. (15 mins) -Parts identified during this lesson: Bobbin case & bobbin, bobbin winder, feed dogs, flywheel, foot pedal, light, needle, on/off switch, presser foot, presser foot lifter, reverse lever or button, spool pin, tension control, thread guides, thread take-up. 4. Next, the teacher will show students how to properly thread the machine. This is a very important skill to be comfortable with and will take a LOT of after class practice. Some students may just want to watch OR follow along on their machine. Spool pin, thread guide, tension slot, thread take-up, thread guides, needle (10 mins) 5. Last, the teacher will show students how to wind the bobbin. Students can either just watch/observe OR follow along (foot pedal and power to the machine required if the student will be following along) (10 mins) PLEASE NOTE: Because of the amount of material being covered in this class, I cannot stop during the lesson to troubleshoot any issues if a student chose to follow along with the threading the needle and winding the bobbin parts of class. If your student wants to follow along, please assure them this is just practice and they are not required to do it perfectly or just to watch if they get stuck. These are two skills that will require a LOT of practice over and over before they can master them! I do take time for questions and showing things multiple times if there is time. Enrolled learners will be provided with 2 downloadable worksheets to complete after class: Place the Parts Worksheet Word Mix-up & Wordsearch
Learning Goals
Students will be more acclimated to their sewing machines.
Other Details
Supply List
A standard Sewing Machine (with needle already installed). *PLEASE NOTE: A "mini" sewing machine will not be a good machine to use for this class as they are completely different than the machine I will be using. This might be frustrating for your child. If you child already has a mini-machine, spend time going through your owner's manual to learn how to use it. Spool of Thread Bobbin
1 file available upon enrollment
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
