In this 55 minute class, students with no prior clarinet experience will be introduced to the clarinet! Students will learn to assemble and clean their instrument, how to hold it and produce sounds, and the first few notes. My teaching style is to learn by doing. I will model for my learners and then check them as they repeat every step. Students should be ready to try each activity and play for me and the class. Every learner will be given individualized attention to ensure a solid...
This class is taught in English.
Students will learn to assemble and clean their instrument, how to hold it and produce sounds, and at least the notes E, D, and C.
I have played the clarinet for 24 years and have been teaching clarinet for 11 years. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Music Instruction from Southern Oregon University in 2009 and my Master of Music in Education degree from the American Band College of Central Washington University in 2019. I have experience with students of all ages and experience levels and am particularly passionate about teaching beginners. I have taught both online and in person and enjoy the opportunity that online teaching gives me to reach students all over the world. As a performing musician, I have had the opportunity to play in large ensembles with legendary trumpet player Doc Severinsen, Canadian Brass, Mariachi Sol De Mexico, and singer Peter Hollens. My primary instruments are clarinet and voice, but I can play all the standard band instruments. I enjoy composing and arranging for and with my students. In June of 2019, I had the honor of performing on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France for the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
A three-page handout will be provided at the session. Students need their own clarinet and reeds (recommended strength 2 or 2.5).
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learners are assessed informally throughout the class in order to guide my instruction.
55 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
