How Outschool Works
Available TimesPacific Time
Don't see a time that works for you?
There are many artworks we can see or hear the names of and immediately recognize who made them, but how much do you know about those artists? Who were they when they weren't painting, and what happened to them? This ongoing course spans gender, time period, and artistic style to understand the lives of famous North American artists. Each meeting, we'll discuss an artist famous throughout the entire world: we'll learn about their childhood and family life, formal and informal education,...
Students will learn about the lives of famous male and female North American artists, the events that led them to make art and the styles they worked in, and how they achieved the level of fame they have today.
Learners will find an optional notes sheet in the classroom.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Listed below are themes and events that heavily shaped an artist's life and/or are the subject matter of their artwork but learners may find distressing or controversial: Frida Kahlo - repeated life-threatening injuries and illnesses, depictions of violence and self-harm Emily Carr - debates of cultural appropriation and colonialism Diego Riveria - belief in and depictions of Marxism and Communism Agnes Martin - struggles with mental health
Material for this class comes from museum and gallery sources including The National Gallery, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
