Class Experience

Thanks to Minecraft, interest in the all-important mangrove tree is booming! There is a lot more to these trees than what you'll learn in the game, however. In "Meet Me in the Mangroves," we will look at pictures of mangrove trees and mangrove swamps while discussing their unique characteristics, the animals that live in their protective roots, and the importance of mangroves in the lives of humans and the future of the planet. Of course we will have some discussions about frogs and fireflies as well! Although this class focuses on real science, we will briefly discuss the Wild Update in Minecraft which includes the mangrove swamp, frogs, and fireflies. Students are encouraged to ask questions and participate in the discussion. We will play a game of Kahoot at the end of class.

My teaching style relaxed, casual, fun, and informative! One word that appears in my reviews over and over is "engagaging." I try to give each learner a chance to participate while keeping interaction fair to all. This means that I frequently mute microphones and disable chat to keep everyone focused.

This class was inspired by the curiosity and interests of my students in the class, "Keeping Up With the Kingdoms" which I offer in both ongoing and flex formats.

About Kahoot!: I have my settings on Kahoot set up so that learners do not need an app, nor do they need any second device or to split the screen. Learners will simply click on a link which I will share in the Zoom classroom chat, then type in a Game PIN which I will provide in class. A tutorial will be included upon enrollment.

PLEASE READ:
Due to the high demand of my classes and the fact that there may be other learners waiting to enroll, I am not able to give last minute or after-class transfers or refunds. Per Outschool policy, students will need to appear briefly on video, so please make sure your camera is working. I can't wait to see you in class! :)

I've been studying science all my life. My father was a renowned herpetologist. As such, I grew up surrounded by animals, plants, and other life forms. I followed my interests in college by studying biology as well as education. I taught middle school science for 21 years, then worked as the middle school science education specialist for the State Department of Education in Alabama for 6 years. In retirement, I am still actively involved in many scientific communities, and stay engaged with groups such as the North American Association for Environmental Education and the National Science Teachers Association. I am passionate and knowledgeable about the study of life, and about passing on this passion to youngsters.
