Class Experience

This course is appropriate for students reading at least at a 7th-grade reading level. This method of teaching vocabulary goes beyond the traditional approach of simply assigning words for the week and was created with well-grounded research on what students need to develop a rich vocabulary. Students are not wasting class time by writing down definitions. Instead, words, roots, and definitions are provided prior to class, and class time is spent engaging with the words in conversation, looking at the etymology, discovering different forms of the words, reading, and critically thinking! This class focuses on words students are expected to encounter while in academics (high school, college, standardized testing, etc.)

Each week, the words are provided via a document. Students are given an optional vocab quiz to take after the class as well as practice worksheets.

*If your child misses a week or plans to miss a class, let me know! I'd be happy to send makeup work!*

Please note: Students are expected to speak and participate in class.

Class breakdown:
1. Vocab warmup!
2. Students be introduced to the word roots and their meanings. The teacher asks students if they can think of other words with these roots.
3. Introduction to words with images and parts of speech. Etymology study and words used in conversation.
4. Sentence frames: Finish the sentence logically through application practice. Example "I was surprised by how lucid Mr. Heyser made Algebra for me because usually . . .(students will use their understanding of roots to finish the sentence)
4. Post-class quiz (optional)!

Each covers roughly 12 words and 3-6 roots. Classes do not build on each other; learners may join and leave at any time.
