Class Experience

Welcome to my ongoing Maths class, based on the UK Year 3/ 4 curriculum taught to develop a deep understanding of number and shape. Good maths comes from good experiential and pictorial understanding, and a sense of how it will be used in real life situations. THIS IS NOT ROTE LEARNING!

My style of teaching and learning is collaborative and based on reasoning. I use the concrete, pictorial, abstract approach to maths teaching and a highly visual approach. Children will learn through engaging taught demos, investigation and collaborative discussion. Each lesson will have materials posted to the classroom beforehand, which should be printed for the children to use throughout the lesson to get the most from each session.

Throughout the Summer Term we will be covering lots of areas of maths. There's loads of new ideas, mental maths, formal methods, tips and tricks and a good dose of number sense. If you take the whole ongoing course (over 1 year: Autumn, Spring, Summer: see other class listings), you will find that ideas are revisited and build as we progress. You are equally welcome to join us at any part during the course as each lesson is differentiated across ability levels and works independently of other lessons.

Each session will be delivered with a slide presentation and children will have plenty of opportunities to have a go, share ideas, play games, use chat, test theories and write on the screen. External websites will sometimes be used to demonstrate, such as interactive thermometers, random number generators and fraction walls.

Each session will have one short piece of homework where children can test their skills and consolidate their learning.

Children should have a good basic knowledge of maths, including knowing 2, 5 and 10 times tables (maybe more), number bonds to ten and twenty and knowing the names of 2D shapes. If they have encountered Place Value using ones (units), tens and hundreds then that's all the better!
