Mathematicians at Work! Pre-Algebra (Middle School Math) Review (FLEX)
Class experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Students will be provided with a mini-tutorial reviewing one skill a week of these four Pre-Algebra skills: order of operations, integer operations, solving equations, and using logical reasoning for problem solving. The tutorials will be delivered using self-created videos, and will provide examples that students can work through to determine mastery of the skill (answer keys with step-by-step solutions will be provided as well). To further enhance the learning of the weekly skill,...
The objectives we will cover are: -using the order of operations (including exponents) in order to simplify expressions -using counters, number lines, and/or a set of rules to solve integer operation problems -using inverse operations in order to solve equations -reviewing a problem solving plan in order to better understand and solve logic problems/graphing
I LOVE math, and I LOVE puzzles that require critical thinking! I make it a goal to find creative and interesting ways to deliver instruction while helping students build their math sense. With 25 years of teaching Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Algebra 2 to students with a variety of skill levels, including 5 years teaching online to students learning from home, I feel uniquely qualified to provide learners with the tools they need to become masters of mathematics!
Homework Offered
Because this is a flex class, "homework" will be for students to complete all activities in the lesson prior to the release of the subsequent lessons. Since practice makes perfect, an additional 10-20 minutes daily should be spent reviewing the notes taken from each of the lessons- this will help keep the skills fresh for each upcoming topic.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Feedback will be provided for the discussion questions, as well as comments, ideas, strategies and answers to questions posted on the Google document.Grades Offered
Students should have a 3-ring binder or some type of math notebook in order to keep track of their notes. A PDF will be provided on Sundays via the messaging system in Outschool with an outline/notes/directions for all of the activities that should be completed prior to the start of the subsequent lesson.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
