Beginner Level
The activities in these lessons will help to reinforce many important mathematical skills such as accurate measuring and constructing, visual problem solving and strategic forward planning. We'll be creating geometric line art and patterns that result in curves, Celtic knotwork, impossible objects, insect symmetry, mazes and labyrinths, cardioids and other symmetrical tiled flooring patterns. week of 5th August 2024 (05.08.24): Reflective Insect Symmetry - an introduction to drawing accurate reflective symmetry week of 12th August 2024 (08.12.24): Rotational Symmetry - Use a pair of compasses to draw an equilateral triangle and then draw a parabola. week of 19th August 2024 (19.08.24): Kaleidoscope - Use a pair of compasses to draw a hexagon and then create beautiful patterns in a kaleidoscope week of 26th August 2024 (26.08.24): Drawing impossible shapes - use mathematical knowledge to create optical illusions (triangle and rectangle) week of 2nd September 2024 (02.09.24): Curves of Pursuit - Use a ruler and compasses to create curves within a square, triangle and hexagon week of 9th September 2024 (09.09.24): Drawing a 6 point star with a pair of compasses with geometric line work - a chance to be creative! week of 16th September 2024 (16.09.24): Celtic Knotwork - use dotted paper to draw a super effective block of knotwork week 23rd September 2024 (23.09.24): Drawing a 12 point dodecagon with a pair of compasses and filling it with geometric line work week 30th September 2024 (30.09.24): Drawing mazes and labyrinths - use squared paper and compasses to create two types of puzzles to use on your family and friends week of 7th October 2024 (07.10.24): Drawing a cardioid - use your knowledge of times-tables to draw a series of patterns based on different number patterns.
Learning Goals
To be able to measure accurately so as to produce geometric drawings.
To use problem solving skills and plan ahead before you undertake specific drawings.
Other Details
Learning Needs
Those with learning needs are welcome to use the chat function to communicate. Each activity is differentiated. I will go at the pace of the slowest learner, whilst explaining the extension to the more able.
Pre-Requisites
They should be able to hold a pencil and have good fine motor skills.
Supply List
a few printouts will be needed - week dependent. compasses and ruler are necessary for each week
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching drawing to beginners in many different genres for 4 years on a variety of teaching platforms. I have taught the techniques of drawing to beginners, together with geometrical mathematical drawing. All my students have been absolute beginners.
