"Math, Yuck! (Or Not)" will help the student understand the basics of addition, subtraction, measurement, word problems, rounding, place value, and geometric figures on a 2nd -3rd grade level. There will be about an hour of homework given between the two weeks. I will first determine where the student(s) need help with online worksheets for each category. Then I will teach the concepts that need to be retaught.
Students will learn how to add digits that add up to ten for long addition, subtraction regrouping, how long a meter is (guitar length) and other metric and customary measurements, how to solve word problems using words like "left" and "all together", rounding using my duck story of ducks trying to cross a busy highway, place value, and simple 2D and 3D figures.
I hated math as a kid until an algebra teacher made all math click. I have been know to show students how to get the correct answer quickly and accurately. My duck story for rounding has ducks trying to cross a four-lane highway with a median in the middle. The 5 is the median. If the number is between 0 and 4, the ducks are just starting to cross the highway but have to turn back because of traffic (hence stay the same). If the number is between 5 and 9, the ducks run to the other side of the road, hence round up).
A worksheet that can be done right online.
The homework page will not cost anything, just to be downloaded. https://www.mathsisfun.com/worksheets/ No membership required.
Assessment will be done through various problems.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
