Strategies for solving mathematical words problems where we use envisioning reading comprehension to discern what mathematical operation is needed to solve the word problem.
Class experience
Students will experience guided practice where I will model how to use envisioning skills in reading comprehension to help them understand a math word problem. Through sketching we will decide what the problem is asking us to do: add or subtract, then we'll show and label work to solve. Students will learn how to read a mathematical word problem to know what operation: addition or subtraction, and solve it. Children will use a variety of strategies to deconstruct a word problem to be able to solve a word problem accurately. Children will show their work both in comprehending the word problem and solving the math computation. Children will be encouraged to write a math equation or number sentence to match their work. Children will be reminded to double check their work for accuracy.
This topic was requested. Additionally, mathematical word problems are something that children struggle with in elementary school through middle school. I would like to provide some strategies at an early school age to help young learners.
