3 live meetings
2 hrs 45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Students will be given the list of all the different math problem types used in textbooks and state testing. We will analyze the features of the 3 different problem types (verbs, pronouns, comparatives), solve problems with these same key features using graphic organizers (flow map, graphs, bubble map), and each student will construct the three different math word problem types independently and share them with the class. The class members will be able to highlight/name the key features of their peers' math word problems. Day 1 will focus on action based problems (flow map), day 2 will focus on static problems (bubble map), and day 3 will focus on comparison problems (graphs). We will begin by discussing the features, reading problems with these features and identifying them, creating problems with like features.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to identify the key features (pronouns, adjectives, verbs, comparatives) in the math word problems, use graphic organizers that will help them organize the information, and use a strategy for solving them effectively. For example, join and separate problems have verbs. They can be told like a narrative story over time using a flow map. For example, "There were 60oz. of water in the jug. 27 ounces spilled. How much water is left in the jug?" The verb "spilled" helps to tell the action in the problem.
