Students will learn the CUBES method for solving single and multi-step math word problems. This method helps students to analyze word problems instead of simply looking for keywords. Throughout the word problems students will practice identifying the important numbers; analyzing the question; identifying math action and keywords; eliminating unnecessary information; evaluating if what they plan to do makes sense, and finally showing their work. Since the focus of this class is on analyzing and building math confidence with word problems, then students should already know how to add and subtract digits up to the hundred-thousands place. Students also must know how to multiply by single and double digits, along with dividing with single and double-digit divisors in order to solve these math problems.

I am a compassionate, hands-on teacher that has spent the last 16 wonderful years teaching all the core subjects in a public school setting. My expertise is in math, science, and language arts for 2nd-5th grade. I had the privilege of working as a reading intervention specialist for PreK-5th grade students where I diagnosed reading difficulties and instructed students in small groups to master skills.
