Math With M&M'S

With my help, students will explore fractions, percents, angle measurements, and pie charts using data we collect from M&M'S. This will allow them to practice skills with something tangible to make sense of the mathematical operations.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 7
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This class is geared towards students that need a little extra help understanding fractions, percents, decimals, and pie charts (circle graphs). We will collect data from a bag of M&M'S, set our data up as fractions, decimals, percents, find angle measurements, and create the perfect circle graph. There are a lot of steps along the way, but I will be guiding your child through the entire process, and make changes necessary to support a higher level of learning more achievable.
This is a lecture type of lesson with hands on practice and a lot of student interaction. Your child will watch me model each step and they will use their own data to compute mathematical operations and create a pie chart as I coach them through it. I encourage your child to ask quesitons as they need to. I would love to hear feedback and questions throughout the course so I can ensure a more personal experience. I want my students to enjoy the course and feel more confident in their math skills. I will check their work throughout the class and praise their efforts along the way.
My intentions are to complete the mathematical operations and pie chart within the two classes in this course. However, I will spend whatever time your child needs on each step along the way. If, for some reason, we do not get to finish the pie charts, I will create an additional course so we can work on those. I want your child to gain as much from this course as possible, so I will not rush them for sake of "finishing".
Learning Goals
Students will learn to set up fractions and convert those fractions to decimals and percents. They will then use that data to find angle measurements, and create a pie chart (circle graph). Going through these steps in creating a circle graph allows students to see relationships between fractions, decimals, and percents. They will also learn how pie charts are created, which will make them stronger in reading and analyzing graphs.

Other Details

Supply List
Students will need paper, pencil, a simple calculator, a ruler, a protractor and a compass for this complete lesson. A small bag of M&M's will also be helpful so your child can collect their own data. If students are unable to obtain M&M'S, they can use my data to complete the mathematical operations. If a compass or protractor is not accessible, students can still benefit from the lesson, they just won't be able to complete their own graph.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a 7th grade science teacher, and graphs play a huge role in our curriculum. I have learned that when students have practice creating graphs, they find that reading graphs becomes much easier. I also taught a 7th grade math class, and have a lot of experience teaching fractions, decimals, and percents. Using M&M's to go through the process of creating a pie chart is a lesson I used in a face to face class, and my students were able to grasp these fundamentals of math.
