Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 9
In these tutoring sessions, I will focus on specific math concepts that your learner is struggling with. The sessions will consist of direct instruction of the concept, guided practice through sample problems, extension activities (if the learner is approaching mastery), and an additional follow-up (reinforcing) activity (upon request). The one-on-one session allows for ample time for your learner to ask questions.

My math instruction uses visuals, diagrams, mnemonics, and immediate feedback on the learner's accuracy and understanding.

The beginning of the lesson will be a review of the particular concept. Next, I will model the procedures for completing the problems. Then we will work through several examples together. Finally, the learner will complete several problems independently and receive feedback on their accuracy and understanding. Word problems will be included when appropriate.

Error analysis will help the learner focus on four types of math mistakes:
Careless-writing the wrong number, not following directions
Computation-adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing incorrectly
Precision-misaligning numbers, dropping a negative sign, forgetting parentheses, incorrect notation
Problem Solving-not following processes and rules, forgetting to complete all steps, not showing thinking for all steps
Learning Goals
Learners will have an improved understanding of the concepts, procedures, and skills of the particular math areas that they determine before each lesson.
Learners will evaluate their own understanding by using the four types of math mistakes: careless, computation, precision, or problem solving.
