Class Experience
US Grade 3
In this class, students will receive individual tutoring from me, a fourth grade teacher who also has experience teaching in third and fourth grade. You can request a topic that you want to work on and receive instruction and practice with or I can pick a priority standard to work on with your child. Please request a topic 24 hours before the class begins by messaging me in the virtual classroom. For any topic, I will follow the model, guided practice, and independent practice lesson. plan. For each class, I will model a strategy, work on the strategy together, and then have students practice independently with support and feedback from me. I focus on conceptual understanding so students know what they are doing and not simply following steps of a formula. My Master's Degree thesis focused on personalized math word problems and the positive effect on student engagements which then lead to higher levels of mastery. I include popular culture in my word problems and develop activities that are engaging and fun to hook the learner. For example, when learning division we will divide M and Ms or use Legos or include word problems about Minecraft, glitter pens, etc. I would recommend prioritizing fractions, multiplication, and division as these are power standards in Common Core State Standards and in the Achieve the Core recommendations. Please have a small whiteboard or a paper and pencil with you!
