Math isn’t just numbers and arithmetic, it is art, music, history, poetry, and stories. Even the most resistant math learners can find enjoyment in the arts, and even advanced math learners can extend their mathematical knowledge through artistic experimentation. The beautiful thing about using art to explore math is that students work inherently at their own level. The focus of the art in this class is the process, not the product. Each class will have a short lecture and discussion about the topic and an exploration into how artists use the topic presented. The lecture, discussion, and exploration will be jumping off points for students to create their own art during the class time, during which students will share their processes and thinking with the class. Lastly, students will share their final product with the class. The topic of this class is patterns and sequences, the art form explored is beadwork, and the art created is mock beadwork.
Learning Goals
This math elective is designed to help middle school students find confidence, resilience, and enjoyment in math through artistic exploration. Students will be know the definitions for and examples of patterns and sequences. They will use this knowledge to create their own design of mock beadwork.
