US Grade 2 - 5
I have been an elementary teacher for 5 years and one thing that I have noticed in the classroom is that estimation and mental math are important math skills but they are hardly made a priority. In this class students will work on their number sense skills by warming up with a question about place value, rounding, or mental math. Number sense is the ability to understand how numbers work and finding patterns in numbers, these warm up questions are perfect for getting kids ready to think about numbers. After the warm up questions students will solve one estimation mystery problem. These estimation problems are provided to students in stages. Students will receive one clue at a time which they will use to estimate how many objects are in a given space. Each clue relates to place value, number properties (such as even or odd numbers and prime or composite numbers), and digits. Students use these clues to estimate the mystery number. Good estimation skills help students check their answers and determine if their final answer is reasonable. Understanding place value, rounding and mental math are also important skills that students can use to help them check their final answer. If your child has ever solved a math problem and their final answer was wayyy off than this class is the class for them! Improved number sense skills will help students determine if their final answer is reasonable or not reasonable. You can join at any time to practice those number sense and estimation skills, remember with practice comes mastery! This ongoing course will follow the pattern below, we will go over new questions each week focusing on two skills a week. Week of January 9th - Place Value and estimation Week of January 16th - Rounding and estimation Week of January 23rd - Mental Math and estimation Week of January 30th - Place Value and estimation
Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and welcome to my page! I have always wanted to be a teacher and have worked with kids in so many different settings ranging from day cares, summer camps to now public schools. I have been teaching elementary since 2018. I currently teach 4th grade and previously taught 3rd grade for two years. Growing up I always thought I wasn't "good" at math so imagine my surprise when I discovered that math was my favorite subject to teach. I love helping students understand math instead of just showing them how to do math. I use conversations and manipulatives to help explain math concepts to students. My classes are driven by conversations between myself and learners, which is a great way for learners to share their thinking. I carry the same passion in my writing classes where I make it my goal to show all students that they can be great writers, even the reluctant ones! I am excited to teach online and share my exciting lessons with learners all over the world. I bring a fun and engaging attitude to every class and love what I do!
As far as my hobbies I have always enjoyed polishing my own nails. When I was younger I dabbled with cool eye catching designs and as I grew up I started polishing my nails in order to take a mental break and an opportunity to do something nice for myself. I love sharing my nail care tips and tricks that I have learned over the years with learners who are looking to become nail pros.
So whether you are a math student who is just waiting for that light bulb to go off, or a budding writer or even just someone looking for a new hobby I can't wait to see you in class!
