45 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
US Grade 4 - 6
This class is designed to meet the needs of learners who are gifted in mathematics and thrive on challenge and developing self-confidence while problem-solving. This is a weekly, ONGOING class with 45-minute live meetings. Learners can join and participate at any point as classes are not sequentially skill-building in nature. Level 2 is designed for learners who need a challenge beyond the original Math Superstars class. Teacher recommendation encouraged. In this class, learners will work together to solve challenging (but fun!) math problems. Each weekly class will begin with a brief mini-lesson that showcases a tip or trick to help learners solve math problems. Learners will then work to solve a variety of math problems designed for gifted learners in grades 4-5. The class atmosphere will be engaging for learners! The lessons in this ongoing class do not build on each other, and the content is not sequential. The following is a breakdown of the first four weeks, including types of problems learners will solve. Week of March 31: The problem set will focus on multiplication and percentages. Learners will stretch their math skills to solve real-world problems using critical thinking. Week of April 7: The problem set will focus on fractions. Learners will stretch their math skills to solve real-world problems using critical thinking. Week of April 14: The problem set will focus on patterns. Learners will stretch their math skills to solve real-world problems using critical thinking. Week of April 21: The problem set will focus on logic and algebra. Learners will stretch their math skills to solve real-world problems using critical thinking. This class is appropriate for young mathematicians who would enjoy a weekly problem-solving challenge! Learners should have a strong foundation in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and an understanding of fractions. This is a great class for accelerated learners who need a little more from their math classes and enjoy critical thinking and problem-solving.
Learning Goals
This class relies on recommendations for differentiating the common core mathematics curriculum for gifted and advanced students. Specifically, students will:
• Think, reason, make sense, and go deeper
• Make generalizations and justify conclusions
• Pose new mathematical questions of interest to investigate
• Communicate with peers to generate new ideas
• Create innovative mathematical problems and solutions
Math problems shared in this class will represent a variety of math standards, including but not limited to:
• Operations and algebraic thinking
• Number and operations in base ten
• Measurement and data
• Geometry
• Number and operations- fractions

Teacher expertise and credentials
I’m so excited to offer this class as both a teacher who is a math nut and as a mom with kids who love math! I am a certified teacher, and in addition to teaching education courses for the local university, I teach accelerated math to small groups in 3rd – 5th grades. Through my small group teaching experiences and background as a professional educator, I have learned so many great strategies for making early math fun and interactive. I’m looking forward to sharing my enthusiasm and experience with you!
