US Grade 9 - 12
This is an ongoing class where we will review all the math concepts that students should be comfortable with before taking High School Chemistry. Students can take any or all of the parts depending on what concepts they would like to review. Students should have taken or currently taking Algebra 1 before this course. We will be reviewing the topics outlined below in each section. We will work through multiple practice problems together as a class. Students should have a calculator that is capable of exponents and has an "EE" button. All scientific calculators have these functions, and some other calculators also do. Week of 1: Converting between non-chemistry units (inches to cm, feet to yards, etc) using dimensional analysis techniques. Week of 2: Introduction into math with exponents. Week of 3: Introduction into scientific notation. We will learn how to convert between scientific notation and regular notation. Week of 4: Math with scientific notation. We will learn how to correctly calculate problems that have numbers in scientific notation. Week of 5: Rearranging equations. We will practice rearranging equations with variable to solve for an unknown. Week of 6: Dimensional analysis. We will practice multi-step dimensional analysis using introductory chemistry examples. Week of 7: SI Units and metric conversions. We will practice using prefixes and doing conversions in the metric system.
Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I am Dr. K!
I have a PhD in Chemistry. I have over 10 years of teaching experience with both children and adults! I have taught thousands of classes in Biology, Chemistry, and some in between (Biochemistry, Ecology, etc).
My biggest philosophy behind teaching is making every concept applicable to the things around us. We can read a textbook and learn about atoms and bonds, but relating that to real world concepts is how we will really grasp the concepts in my classes.
