Class Experience
US Grade 2 - 6
If you are interested in this tutoring package please contact me. I will work with you to arrange a schedule that works for your family and we can discuss any specific concerns you have regarding your child's math. I can help your child with a variety of activities including assess and teach basic math concepts, help with homework, practice and study for tests, or lead overall math enrichment activities. Private tutors have many different approaches to helping their students. I have developed my own personal style over the last 16 years of working as a professional private tutor and I find that it helps many students bridge gaps in their learning and become more confident in their math skills. I typically follow the following overall structure: Beginnings of classes are spent allowing my new student and I to get to know each other. I start with this because it allows students to become more comfortable with me and student comfort is important, especially for those who struggle with math. I talk to my new student about his or her interests and we do some basic getting to know you activities that I have geared toward math. I intersperse these activities with a beginning assessment of the student's abilities in math. I have a personally crafted assessment plan that I follow when gauging my student's needs. All classes following the first two will include a variety of different learning activities that are designed to 1) work with each individual student's learning style, 2) address each student's specific needs or gaps in learning, 3) include activities that the student will find engaging and interesting, and 4) build on skills the student is already strong in and slowly use their confidence in these areas to develop further math skills. I employ a variety of specific activities depending on each learner's needs. A few of the activities your child may participate in are: ~ Math-related games that include both hands-on and screen-oriented activities ~ Using touchpoints, number lines, or other manipulatives to help students build confidence ~ Some worksheets that use the skills we are working on in class to solve riddles or puzzles ~ Intersperse learning activities with other brain-building activities ~ Practice completing problems using the whiteboard feature of Zoom Since the learning experience is all developed specifically for your child, no two learners will have the exact same experience. My teaching philosophy is that not all children can learn the same way, and only when children are comfortable can they begin to develop their confidence and abilities.
Learning Goals
Students will develop confidence in their math abilities. They will also improve their abilities in computation and performing basic operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide). After those skills are mastered students will learn more mathematical applications of these skills. The long-term goal for each student is to help him or her reach approximate grade level in their math skills or meet a goal decided upon my parents and myself.
